Colin Garland had made his decision to retire in August as he battled in his recovery from a knee reconstruction. He found himself more motivated in his new role working with the Demons' women's program. "I was looking forward to Mondays and Thursdays, doing the coaching with the girls, more than anything else. "As a footballer, you have to be a bit selfish in some regard, especially at the top level, and I just felt like what I was doing with the developing of the girls, it was a lot more rewarding in the end than what I was doing for my own self in my career. "That's when I knew in my mind I'd be treading water next year if I was to remain on the list. "I really like helping people out and I guess coaching in the end is helping people build their careers. "I didn't think it was going to lead to this, but I'm really excited about the opportunity."

Colin Garland relinquishes the final year of his contract to retire and focus on coaching at the Demons, most notably in women's football. Garland's last act as a footballer was suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in a VFL practice match on season eve that cost him the entire 2017 season. "This decision has been some time in the making. In the end, the well was dry," Garland said. "I couldn't live the trademark anymore as a player. I didn't want to waste a year remaining on the list, both personally and for the team."

Colin Garland's start to the season is in jeopardy after he was carried off in a VFL practice match. The 28-year-old suffered a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Casey Demons in a VFL practice game against Port Melbourne at Casey Fields. Garland was involved in a marking contest in the last quarter when he landed awkwardly and had to be stretchered from the ground. He will have scans on Monday, but the Demons believe he has ruptured his ACL.

Luke Goetz has failed in his bid to overturn a misconduct charge at the Tribunal on Tuesday night, leaving the rookie with a $1500 fine. Goetz took the uncommon step of challenging a fine after he was charged for pushing Melbourne defender Colin Garland over the fence during the Bulldogs' NAB Challenge game in Craigieburn. "I didn't intend to but when I saw him cut in front … I put my hands up to protect myself," Goetz said. "When I was running it didn't register how close (the fence) actually was. "It was just a matter of the momentum we both had."

Colin Garland rejects free agency and commits to Melbourne until the end of the 2018 season. "I told my manager I didn't want to speak to any other club, but it's funny after seeing one of my great mates [James Frawley] win a premiership on the weekend, because you have to be envious of success," Garland said. "I was watching the game and people said, 'Wouldn't you love success?' and I said, 'It wouldn't mean anything to me unless it was with Melbourne'. "I'm so happy for guys who go on and win a premiership, but I truly believe that we can go on and make finals next year. So in the end, I just wanted to be a Melbourne player."

Colin Garland will spend some time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery for a broken hand. Garland showed extraordinary courage to play out the Queen Birthday's game against Collingwood despite sustaining the injury in the first quarter. "[He] knew that we were struggling a little bit and one man down, so he played the whole game with a broken hand," Melbourne fitness coach Dave Misson said.

Colin Garland is set to miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery on his right ankle to fix a troublesome bone spur. "Colin has a small bone spur on his ankle, which has flared up as training intensity has increased recently," Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said. "It was deemed that the best course of action was to have this shaved in a minor operation. "By having this operation now, it will allow Colin enough time to recover before the start of the season and prevent the potential of it disrupting his season."

Colin Garland says his quiet personality may not suit the type required by a captain of Melbourne. "I'm not a guy that stands up in team meetings all the time or has a lot to say here or there, but I feel as though I can have a conversation with someone if they feel like they need to talk," Garland said. "I feel like I'm very good at giving direct and honest feedback. So I think that's probably more my style, rather than sitting out the front and being the figurehead."

Nathan Jones has taken out his second successive best and fairest award for the Demons, winning the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Memorial Trophy. Jones won with 365 votes in a remarkably close count, just shading consistent defender Colin Garland who finished on 360 votes. "To be honest I'm probably more proud this year than I was last year. I was really driven, personally, to back up from last year knowing there'd be more pressure on me due to having a pretty successful year last year," Jones said in his acceptance speech. "It's been such a dark year for the footy club. Hopefully tonight closes a chapter and we can reopen it in 2014 and get the footy club back to where it belongs."
Thursday, 22 August 2013
Colin Garland will play his 100th game this week against Adelaide. "To play 100 games for any AFL club is a really good achievement and you'll probably look back on, once your career is done, and be happy with," Garland said. "It's been a long journey for me and I've made some great friendships over the time. I'm really happy to bring up the hundred this week."

Colin Garland, Sam Blease and Mitch Clark pledge support for embattled coach Mark Neeld after the Demons were thumped by Essendon to the tune of 148 points. "As a group we've really got to stick together and find out who cares about the place," Garland said. "We're 100 per cent behind Neeldy, we're just in a tough spot at the moment, hopefully we can get out of it," Blease said. "We want to play for Neeldy, we love having Neeldy here, we're in this together. It's not just Neeldy - Neeldy's not out there on the ground," Clark said.

Colin Garland says he may have been a surprise inclusion to Melbourne's leadership group but that his quiet nature may actually be an asset. "Some of the guys that I first started with that aren't here (now) might be a little bit shocked," Garland said. "It's definitely something I have improved on, but it has also helped me because I feel like I am a very good observer, which is something I think you need to do to lead."

Tuesday, 12 May 2009
Melbourne's Colin Garland says he is aware of the setbacks of navicular fracture victim Matthew Egan from Geelong and will take his time returning. "I found out the day of the Egan article, and it showed the diagram of his injury and that's when it hit me," Garland said. "It was pretty devastating at first. But it made me realise I have to take some time out for this and not try to rush back. "Obviously, you can see what happens if it doesn't heal properly."
Tuesday, 5 May 2009
Melbourne defender Colin Garland is expecting to return from a foot injury but no timeframe has been placed on the young Demon. "We're just taking it as it comes and making sure it's right," Garland said. "They haven't really told me what round they want me back this year."
Friday, 3 April 2009
Emerging Melbourne defender Colin Garland will miss up to four months of football after a stress fracture was discovered in his right foot. The 20-year-old pulled up sore from the Demons' 34-point loss to North Melbourne last Sunday and will have surgery on his navicular bone on Monday.
