Dean Brogan Biography

Friday, 26 October 2018

Dean Brogan is appointed as Port Adelaide's ruck coach in a part-time role.

"Dean has impressive credentials when it comes to working with both experienced ruckmen and those still developing their craft," football manager Chris Davies said.

"Given the spread of ruckmen on our list, he was the ideal candidate to take on the role."

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

Dean Brogan finally calls an end to his playing career at the age of 34 and with almost 200 games to his name.

"This is definitely it. It's time to move on and get into my coaching, I'm really keen to do that," Brogan said.

"I always used to think about how much I'd hate to be a coach. Now I know it's one of the best jobs in the world."

Wednesday, 17 April 2013

Dean Brogan is suspended for three matches following a high bump to Jack Newnes which resulted in the St Kilda youngster breaking his jaw.

Brogan said he had apologised to Newnes post-match and later via a text message and he felt terrible about an injury sustained from an incident he didn't feel was significant.

Newnes, who will miss one to two matches with a broken jaw, submitted a statement as evidence and said he went to bump Brogan to make his presence felt.

Tuesday, 13 November 2012

The Giants delist ruckman Dean Brogan, creating possible space on their list for Adelaide's Kurt Tippett who faces charges for breaching AFL player rules.

"We obviously respect the AFL Commission hearing and await their findings," Giants football manager Graeme Allan said.

"We also want to see the terms on which Kurt Tippett will nominate for the draft."

Tuesday, 30 October 2012

Gws ruckman Dean Brogan, 34 in December, will go around again in 2013.

"Dean has been a fantastic acquisition for the club, not just as a player but also helping develop our young ruckmen and I'm delighted he will continue in both of those roles next year," Giants football manager Graeme Allan said.

Friday, 6 July 2012

GWS ruckman Dean Brogan says the end of his career is approaching as the club places emphasis on developing its younger players.

"There's not much longer to go, so I'm just going to enjoy every minute of it," Brogan said.

"'Sheeds' (coach Kevin Sheedy) could turn around any day and say 'I'm going to rest you this week and going to play the kids'. So every moment I get out there I'm going to enjoy it and treat it like my last game."

Thursday, 29 March 2012

Dean Brogan and Luke Power will return from injuries on Friday in a scratch match against the Sydney Swans reserves.

"I just want to get through and get a bit of fitness and put my hand up for next week," Brogan said.

"I'm not looking to set the world on fire tomorrow, just get through and then hit the track next week and get ready for North Melbourne."

Sunday, 23 October 2011

Dean Brogan admits he will have to be nursed through his debut season with GWS, but expects to prove his worth on and off the ground.

"It's a unique situation and I'm not going up there thinking I'm going to be the main man in the ruck," Brogan said.

"I'm going up to help the young guys and to get them ready for everything AFL footy will throw at them. But … I'm going up there to play as well as I can before anything else."

Monday, 17 October 2011

Port Adelaide has left itself open to raids on its uncontracted players, but the club is still very happy with its trade week results after swapping veterans Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan and pick 69 for pick 49.

"We would have loved to have been protected from losing another uncontracted player in the future but that was never going to happen," Power football operations manager Peter Rohde said.

"We wanted to make sure we did the right thing by them, wanted to get some value for our club out of it as well and to be honest, we would have been delisting them in a couple of weeks' time."

Tuesday, 4 October 2011

GWS has agreed to compensate the Power for the rights to "retired" players Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan.

"We've had talks with GWS and they've agreed to deal with us at some stage during trade week," Power football operations manager Peter Rohde said.

"GWS has some other deals to do before we can sort something out, but we're pleased it has agreed to work with us to come to an arrangement."

Wednesday, 7 September 2011

Retired Port veterans Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan are reported by the media to be signing with GWS and Power captain Dom Cassisi says he would fully support their decision to do so.

"Chad and 'Broges' have been great servants of our football club. They've given the club every bit of what they could deliver, and we can't question that," Cassisi said.

"If they decide they've got another year in them and there's an opportunity there, I think they'd be silly not to take it."

GWS coach Kevin Sheedy confirms interest in retired Port veterans Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan.

"We've had discussions with them, no doubt, and I've read that today," Sheedy said.

"If they're capable of wanting to come up here and help build this team, then we will be interested in those sorts of players and other players that would be interested."

Thursday, 1 September 2011

Dean Brogan has declared himself a certain starter for his farewell AFL appearance against Melbourne.

"It's been a long time since I last played [in round 13]," Brogan said.

"I don't intend to go out there on Sunday and set the world on fire, but I'll give effort and do the best I can."

Friday, 26 August 2011

Dean Brogan has probably played his last game for Port with injury likely to rule him out of a farewell game in round 24.

"It's touch and go at the moment," Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus said.

"'Broges' tried to get up last week, but got pretty sore towards the end of the week. He'd have to be close to fully fit … probably 80 per cent to play."

Tuesday, 28 June 2011

Port Adelaide premiership ruckman Dean Brogan says he is contemplating announcing his retirement soon.

"I'm still deciding in my own head. But it looks like I'll make a decision pretty soon, probably in the next day or two. I haven't quite got there yet ... but I'm close," Brogan said.

""I've just got to speak to the club about a couple of more things and do things the right way."

Port Adelaide vice-captain Dean Brogan will retire at the end of the season, saying the club needs to rebuild.

"I've had 11 fantastic years, but it's definitely the correct call in everyone's interests," Brogan said.

"I've been weighing it up in recent weeks, but I'm really comfortable with the decision. I'm 33 in December and while there are times I think I could go around for another year, it's the best thing for everyone."

Wednesday, 25 May 2011

Dean Brogan says Port Adelaide need to find an experienced ruckman for next season.

"Our younger guys haven't come along as quickly as we'd hoped," Brogan said.

"I'm not sure where I stand personally next year...but I'm not getting any younger and our younger guys really need to start to step up."

Friday, 4 February 2011

Veteran Port Adelaide ruckman Dean Brogan has added a coaching role to his duties this season by acting as ruck coach to the club's younger ruckmen.

"Matty has asked me to be more of a mentor to those guys and I'm quite happy to do it. If the club had asked me three years ago I probably would've told them to get stuffed, but there comes a time in you're career when you've got to put those feelings aside for the benefit of the club," Brogan said.

"You've got to teach them the tricks that normally you would keep to yourself. I'm more open about that now and I'm enjoying seeing them beat me at training and using my tricks against me."

Monday, 9 August 2010

After a 94-point thrashing at the hands of St Kilda, Port Adelaide ruckman Dean Brogan says the players want to finish the season strongly to make sure caretaker coach Matthew Primus is appointed as coach for season 2011.

"We want to finish off well for the club and for our supporters, but we really want Matty to stay around and we need to show the club and the board members that we want to play under him," Brogan said.

Friday, 21 May 2010

Port Adelaide ruckman Dean Brogan says his teammates didn't like him when he arrived at the club and thought he was soft.

"I certainly struggled with the greater professionalism and extra sacrifices you had to make and my new teammates made it quite clear that I had to change or I would be booted out," Brogan said.

"They didn't care that I was a basketballer trying to make it at footy. As far as they were concerned, I was nobody really and I had to get with the program or get out."

Friday, 5 February 2010

Dom Cassisi has been re-appointed Port Adelaide captain, and has two new vice-captains in Dean Brogan and Jacob Surjan.

The trio were selected based on the input of the Power's new leadership mentors consisting of former national women's basketball coach Jan Stirling and coach Mark Williams' sister, Jenny.

"It stands out that these three guys are the most dominant, most vocal, best communicators and are comfortable in their own skin as far as where they sit within the organisation and the AFL world," Williams said.

Thursday, 21 January 2010

Despite being the only experienced ruckman at Port Adelaide, Dean Brogan is still feeling pressure to perform.

"In the past we'd go into the season with myself and Ladey and if one of us went down the other would step up. Now, it's me and then six other guys fighting for a position," Brogan said.

"It's pretty competitive and I need to make sure I'm on my A-game because if I don't stay sharp and keep improving my spot will be gone."

Thursday, 18 June 2009

Port Adelaide ruckman Dean Brogan says his side is confident it can give the top eight a shake despite some patchy form and a mounting injury list.

"We're 6-6 and middle of the road. We've played some good games, we've played some bad games and we've played some average games," Brogan said.

"There are a lot of good teams on 6-6 that are still trying to find their way and we're one of them. We've got the break this week and Geelong the week after but after that we've got a lot of home games.

"We've got another 10 games to go and as disappointed as we are about the games we lost and the way we lost last week, we're moving on and we feel we've got a good enough group to make the finals."

Wednesday, 13 May 2009

Ben Cousins has already registered on Port Adelaide's radar with Power ruckman Dean Brogan conceding that his side will have to pay attention to the Brownlow medallist.

"Cousins is back and we all know how good he looks, he's very fit. He played really well considering he missed a big chunk of footy," Brogan said.

"He'd be coming over here wanting to play well. He hasn't played here for a while so no doubt he's definitely on our radar. We can't let him get under our guard as he's a champion player."

Monday, 13 April 2009

After a week spent on the sidelines through suspension watching his side lose to the Eagles, Port Adelaide's Dean Brogan felt he had to make up for lost time against the Demons.

"Either way you look at it, I missed a game and let the team down. Whether I was hard done by or not, the fact is I missed a game and we got belted," Brogan said after a convincing win against Melbourne.

"I thought, maybe, I could've contributed last week, but I wasn't there. I wanted to come out and make a statement today. I think the boys and myself did that".

Friday, 3 April 2009

The war of words between over Dean Brogan's suspension continued today, with Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams weighing in.

"My view is that two players walking - walking - and one bumps into the other one, yes he did it, he bumped him, but gee whizz, footy's getting a little precious," Williams said.

"It was pretty insignificant as far as I was concerned."

Thursday, 2 April 2009

Chad Cornes is disappointed with Essendon's Andrew Lovett's role in Power ruckman Dean Brogan suspension.

Lovett's evidence at the AFL Tribunal was pivotal in Brogan being suspended for one match for engaging in rough conduct against the Bomber midfielder at quarter-time of last Sunday's match.

Lovett told the tribunal he was shocked to be forcefully bumped from behind by Brogan during the break in play.

Cornes intimated that Lovett broke an unwritten players' code of not implicating an opponent at the tribunal.

Port Adelaide onballer Shaun Burgoyne says his side has up to four added reasons to beat West Coast on Sunday.

Ruckman Dean Brogan's suspension could open the door for a fourth Port Adelaide milestone against West Coast at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

Utility Chad Cornes (200 games), onballer Shaun Burgoyne (150) and forward Brett Ebert (100) could now be joined by defender Toby Thurstans, who is also on the eve of his 100th game.

"The club makes a really big deal of milestone games," Burgoyne said. "I remember when I first got here, the club really drummed it into the guys to reward the players with a win and to go out there and play for the guys' milestones."

Port Adelaide plans to shark Dean Cox's hit-outs after Dean Brogan was suspended for Sunday's match at Subiaco.

Tuesday, 31 March 2009

Port Adelaide's Dean Brogan and Geelong's Steve Johnson will contest their penalties from the Match Review Panel.

Brogan was charged with a rough conduct offence against Essendon’s Andrew Lovett and will challenge his two-match suspension.

Johnson was not suspended for attempting to strike Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge but will contest the 60 demerit points he was given. He was originally given 80 demerit points but his five-year good record saw the penalty reduced by 25 per cent.

Port Adelaide ruckman Dean Brogan will miss Sunday's match against the Eagles after being found guilty of rough conduct.

The Power big man was staring at two weeks on the sidelines had he been found guilty, after deciding to challenge a charge of engaging in rough conduct against Essendon speedster Andrew Lovett.

Port Adelaide opted to fight the charge and, despite the AFL jury members downgrading the rough conduct charge from intentional to reckless, Brogan will still miss one match.
