Eddie Betts and Steve Johnson headline a list of 10 new AFL life members.

Betts, Jordan Lewis, Kade Simpson and the recently retired Johnson and Andrew Mackie automatically qualified for life membership having passed 300 AFL games.

The AFL announced on Wednesday it had also conferred life membership for "special service to the game" to former Commission chairman and Carlton premiership captain Mike Fitzpatrick, 1993 Norm Smith medallist Michael Long and dual Richmond premiership player and long-time broadcaster Rex Hunt.

An emotional Joel Selwood pays tribute to retiring teammates Andrew Mackie and Tom Lonergan after the Cats' preliminary finals loss to Adelaide.

"It's going to be sad not having them. Being next to 'Domsy's' (Lonergan's) locker for a long time and Mack's just such a great person," Selwood said.

"Two individuals who really set the standard for this club for a long time and not just on the field, but off it.

"They set the right tone, behaved really well. They're going to be missed in many ways."

Andrew Mackie and Tom Lonergan will retire at the end of the 2017 season.

The defenders told Geelong teammates of their decision in the middle of Simonds Stadium immediately after the Cats' 44-point win over Greater Western Sydney.

"There is no one in the game I respect more than those two," Geelong coach Chris Scott said.

"They give to the team, they help their teammates, they sacrifice their own interests if it is necessary for the betterment of not just the team itself but the football club."

Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan and Mark Blicavs are new additions to Geelong's leadership group for 2016.

The trio join existing leaders Joel Selwood, Harry Taylor and Tom Hawkins while veterans Corey Enright and Andrew Mackie have stepped down to make room for the new members.

Selwood will be captain for the fifth successive season while Taylor remains vice-captain.

Tuesday, 8 September 2015

Andrew Mackie will continue his decorated career with the Cats after re-signing with the club to play for two more years.

"We didn’t achieve what we hoped for this year, but the blocks are in place for more success. We are hungry to get back into the finals and I know we all feel the same way," Mackie said.

Monday, 9 March 2015

Joel Selwood will lead the Cats for a fourth season after the club revealed a reduced leadership group for 2015.

Harry Taylor has been named vice-captain, while Tom Hawkins and Andrew Mackie remain in the group.

In what is expected to be his last AFL season, veteran Corey Enright has returned to the group after a two-year absence.

Steve Johnson, Mathew Stokes, James Kelly and Mitch Duncan have been left out of the reduced squad.

"We look forward to working together. We've got a job to do and we're really looking forward to getting down to it," Selwood said.

Wednesday, 26 March 2014

Andrew Mackie will play his 200th game when the Cats take on Brisbane at the Gabba.

"It's obviously something that I'm very proud of," Mackie said.

"To do it with this great group that I've been luck enough to play with for 12 years is an honour and something that I don't take lightly.

"Every day you come into the club is a great day. It's great fun. The environment we get to work in is unbelievable, so I'm very lucky."

Tuesday, 14 September 2010

Geelong defender Harry Taylor says teammate Andrew Mackie has been working hard in the hope of a recall after being dropped for the Cats' finals series in 2010 so far.

"He took it (the omission) on board. He's a very strong individual and he's got a lot of great mates to get around him, and we all did," he said.

"He went away and was told the things he needs to work on and he's been working on them as hard as anybody to make sure he gets back in the team."
