Aaron Davey will join Melbourne for its pre-season training camp at Maroochydore in late January as the club continues to contribute to the indigenous coaching cause. The plan is to upskill Davey and leave him in a stronger position to potentially forge an AFL coaching career, with the hope other clubs will consider doing the same with budding indigenous coaches. "I got my level two accreditation at the back end of my career and a development role would have been ideal, but it wasn't to be," Davey said. "Everything is based around timing as well and, unfortunately, I don't think there was too much change in coaching personnel when I was coming out."

"I felt like a teenager again, getting my opportunity at the start of the game. At the same time, I probably set myself to try and inspire my teammates early in the game."

"I know supporters sometimes ask whether I want to be here or not. Sometimes that's just how my body language is, when I'm exhausted or just pottering around. I try my best for my teammates," he said. "I've just got to get my workrate up. I reckon that's the thing that's dropped off a bit. I've just got to keep chipping away. That was what I prided myself in my first few years, my workrate. I know I haven't been able to play the footy I would like to have."

We have come a long way, but I'm excited about where we are going.

Aaron Davey is suspended for one match by Melbourne's leadership group for actions that they have deemed to be unprofessional. Davey had travelled to Darwin to attend the funeral of the mother of the best man at his wedding. "A lot of people are bitterly disappointed because Aaron is seen as a future leader of our club," Melbourne football manager Chris Connolly said. "But leadership is not a part-time responsibility. He's got to prove himself on a lot of different fronts now. He has shown honesty and he seems remorseful, but the proof will be in the pudding."
