Troy Chaplin Biography

Friday, 1 November 2024

Melbourne backs senior coach Simon Goodwin to lead the embattled club back to finals but have overhauled his assistants following a review into their football department.

"The review confirmed the strength of our football program's leadership and staff, while identifying an opportunity to refresh energy and leadership within the assistant coaching group supporting senior coach Simon Goodwin," president Brad Green said in a letter to members.

The Demons have appointed Goodwin's old Adelaide teammate and experienced assistant coach Nathan Bassett to oversee their backline and team defence.

Former Melbourne skipper Nathan Jones returns to work as midfield coach alongside Sam Radford, while Troy Chaplin will switch to forward line coach.

Underperforming Melbourne has taken the drastic step of restructuring its coaching panel mid-season.

Among a raft of changes announced after the 3-9 Demons' mid-season break, Jade Rawlings has relinquished the role of coaching the club's VFL affiliate Casey Demons and will step up to become Melbourne's forward coach.

Rawlings replaces Max Rooke, who will become a development coach.

The experienced Brendan McCartney, previously the defensive coach, will now mentor the club's AFL and VFL assistant coaches, while Troy Chaplin will become the standalone backline coach.

An embarrassed Simon Goodwin insists he's ready to coach Melbourne again despite being forced to cut short a press conference on Wednesday due to illness.

Goodwin fronted reporters on Wednesday but halfway through his voice became to waiver, as it became apparent he was unwell.

Assistant coach Troy Chaplin stepped in to finish the media conference as Goodwin was assessed by the club doctor.

"I just wasn't feeling too well at all and it was just a bit of a dizzy spell. I had a few tests, got sorted and felt fine," Goodwin said.

"I got a bit of a razz from the boys. It obviously created some good vision too. Outside of it being a little bit embarrassing, everything is fine, which is great.

"I think it was just a little sign to say slow down a bit. That's what my wife told me, and the kids have reminded me to slow down and take it easy and look after yourself."

Troy Chaplain joins Melbourne's coaching team as an 'offensive co-ordinator'.

Chaplin, 30, retired from the Tigers in July after suffering a dip in form. He stayed at Richmond as an assistant coach and had been mooted to make that shift permanent after interviewing to join Damien Hardwick's team next year.

However he told the Demons' website that a call from former teammate and Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney convinced him to take the position with the Demons. The pair played at the Power together from 2004-07.

"There's been a little bit of speculation the last few weeks. The way it came about was Josh Mahoney gave me a phone call the other week and really wanted to have a chat," Chaplin said.

"A couple of days later, he asked if I'd be willing to join the club in a coaching capacity. I thought about it for a couple of days but it didn't take too long to make a decision."

Tuesday, 19 July 2016

Troy Chaplin announces his retirement after 215 games with the Tigers and Port Adelaide.

Chaplin, who has struggled to earn senior selection this year as the Tigers turn to youth, will remain with the club in a coaching capacity for the rest of the season.

The 30-year-old told his teammates on Tuesday and said after 13 seasons at the top level the time was right to enter his next phase in the game.

"The body's not been able to handle it as well as I would have liked this year and as a result my form has dropped off a fair bit," he said.

"Mentally I'm still there … but the past month training-wise has really taken a toll and I just can't get up for it like I used to.

"I'd love to go round again and there's no doubt in the next six or seven weeks I'm going to be asking myself, 'Why am I doing this right now?'

"But I'm at ease now. It's probably been on my mind for a little while and I can happily say that I've been extremely lucky to have 13 great years at two great clubs."

Friday, 15 January 2016

Richmond has made two additions to its leadership group for 2016, with midfielder Trent Cotchin retained for his fourth year as captain.

Reigning club champion Alex Rance has been added to the five-man leadership group, along with small forward Shane Edwards.

Vice-captains Brett Deledio and Ivan Maric remain in official leadership roles, which are voted on by the players in consultation with the coaches, while defenders Steven Morris and Troy Chaplin have been omitted.

Monday, 11 May 2015

With the Tigers only managing two wins from six games so far in 2015, Troy Chaplin says he is angry with the team.

"We need to challenge one another and take the feedback and be honest with one another," Chaplin said.

"We have got respect for one another. We need to challenge one another and put it on one another to improve as a group and individually as well and that goes for me as well.

"I'm spewing with the way we've been playing at the moment and I'm not the only one."

Wednesday, 10 December 2014

Steven Morris has been promoted to Richmond's five-man leadership group for 2015.

Morris joins captain Trent Cotchin, Troy Chaplin, Ivan Maric and Brett Deledio in the group, with the retired Daniel Jackson making way.

"This group was decided upon by the players, and it is an acknowledgement of the important role they play in driving standards and communications between the playing group and the rest of the club," Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said.

"We are developing and driving leadership across our entire playing group."

Monday, 14 July 2014

Travis Boak has taken a swing at Richmond defender Troy Chaplin and his passionate celebrations late in Sunday's 20-point win over the Power.

Chaplin contributed to his former club's demise, kicking two crucial goals in the final quarter and making no effort to hide his elation.

Chaplin grabbed at his Richmond jumper and then ran with his arms outstretched like the wings of an airplane when he booted a goal to end any chance of a Port comeback at Etihad Stadium.

The win was obviously sweet for Chaplin but Boak pointed out the Tigers were still languishing in 12th spot on the ladder despite three consecutive victories.

"They were winning so I guess he can do what he wants, but I hope he's enjoying the year they're having," Boak said.

Tuesday, 11 February 2014

Jack Riewoldt and Dylan Grimes are dropped from Richmond's 2014 leadership group to be headed by Trent Cotchin.

Brett Deledio is again vice-captain with ruckman Ivan Maric and 2013 best and fairest winner Dan Jackson also voted into the group.

Former Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin is the new addition in his second season as a Tiger.

"Given the improved maturity of the team, we believe a five-player leadership group is a sufficient representation of the playing list," Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said.

"We are proud of the way Trent embraced the captaincy in his first year, and we're confident he will continue to be a strong leader on and off the field, along with Brett as vice-captain."

Friday, 31 January 2014

After overcoming knee issues, Troy Chaplin managed to play 22 games in 2013 and Richmond expects the defender's durability to improve even further in 2014 following a solid pre-season.

"His knee has improved enormously and we're thrilled with the amount of training he's been able to do," backline coach Ross Smith said.

"Last year he had an operation as he came to us and that really curtailed most of his pre-season, but he still had a very strong season anyway and was really important for us.

"We still have to manage his knee every now and then but not as much as we had to last year."

Thursday, 7 March 2013

Former Power Troy Chaplin will make his debut for the Tigers in their upcoming NAB Cup against Hawthorn.

"He's a very good player but he's also got outstanding leadership qualities and will further help guys such as Alex Rance, Ben Griffiths, Jake Batchelor, all these types of players around him," Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said.

"We're looking forward to solidifying our back six with his presence. We'll look to get three quarters into him the following week."

Wednesday, 10 October 2012

Richmond recruit Troy Chaplin says the club is on the verge of playing finals.

"The 'go-home' factor was a key to it, but their list is in a fantastic position at the moment … with the guys that they've brought in and added to their list … [and] their younger guys as well," Chaplin said.

"Trent Cotchin is going to be a superstar of the competition, we all know that, but they are starting to add some depth now and are on the cusp of playing finals."

Thursday, 4 October 2012

Troy Chaplin has joined Richmond after Port Adelaide declined to match the Tigers' free agency offer.

"Troy needed serious knee surgery towards the end of 2012 and while we hope he has many years of football left, we're not prepared to commit to the extent Richmond is," football manager Peter Rohde said.

"We would have liked Troy to remain at Alberton, but on terms suitable to the Port Adelaide Football Club as well as the player.

"In fact, we had what we considered a fair contract in front of Troy and his management for a long period this year, but unfortunately they were unwilling to sign."

Tuesday, 2 October 2012

Richmond has offered a contract to Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin who is a restricted free agent.

Thursday, 27 September 2012

St Kilda star Brendon Goddard heads the list of six restricted free agents released by the AFL which also includes Essendon's Angus Monfries, Melbourne's Brent Moloney, Port Adelaide duo Danyle Pearce and Troy Chaplin and Richmond's Luke McGuane.

Tuesday, 14 August 2012

Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin will not play again this season after opting for surgery on an injured knee.

"[With] the opportunity to have a rest the previous week, we found that he really was refreshed and recovered and ready to play," Power interim coach Garry Hocking said.

"Unfortunately from the game, you've probably seen in the second half that he deteriorated … he needs to now go into surgery."

Friday, 3 August 2012

Troy Chaplin requires knee surgery but Power coach Matthew Primus denies the defender's season is over.

"He's been battling since the middle of the year just doing half our main training session and that's all he's doing a week," Primus said.

"We think Troy's still going to play a vital role for us, not only this year but in the coming years, but we'll see how goes ... it's definitely getting sorer every week. The closer the end of the season comes, the closer it'll come for having surgery for him."

Wednesday, 1 August 2012

Port Adelaide has rejected a report that Richmond has offered defender Troy Chaplin a four-year deal.

"All the discussions that we've ever had with Troy is that he hasn't spoken to anybody, his manager hasn't spoken to any other club, so we'll take Troy on that word and keep working with him," Power coach Matthew Primus said.

"He plays an important part for us for the rest of the year and we see him as somebody that's going to be a part of our football club. He's telling us the exact same thing from his point of view."

Saturday, 10 July 2010

Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin says the playing group can't help but feels partly responsible for Mark Williams' sudden departure as coach of the Power.

"You can't help but feel guilty for some of the performances we've dished up this year and unfortunately it's always the coach that feels the wrath," Chaplin said.

"To Choco's credit, he's continued to try and get the best out of us and I think he has. He and the other coaches put in enormous hours to make us a better team.

Wednesday, 7 April 2010

Port Adelaide denies allegations that it deliberately stretchered Jacob Surjan from the field to kill any momentum West Coast had during their round 2 clash.

"There has been a lot of allegations - and the AFL will sort them out," Power defender Troy Chaplin said.

"The advantage us was none. The clock stopped. I'm not sure how it can be an advantage for us.

"The talk of us taking him off and slowing the game down (is wrong) . . . (Jacob) is one of our best players, he is our vice-captain. We are already one down on the bench. Why would we want to lose another one?"

Tuesday, 7 July 2009

North Melbourne and Port Adelaide will head to the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night in the hope of clearing two key defenders.

The Kangaroos will challenge a striking charge against Daniel Pratt, who is facing a one-week ban, while the Power's Troy Chaplin will try to overturn a two-week stint on the sidelines.

Defender Troy Chaplin and Daniel Pratt have failed to overturn their charges at the AFL tribunal.

Chaplin argued that he had no realistic alternative as he was committed to making a contest against Brisbane's Daniel Rich which the field umpire deemed as "late, unnecessary and unreasonable".

"I'm not sure what I'm expected to do in that situation," Chaplin told the tribunal via video link-up from Adelaide.

"I'm not sure how I could deviate when I've chosen to go."

Monday, 6 July 2009

The match review panel offers Melbourne Colin Sylvia four weeks for striking Scott Selwood, Jared Brennan gets offered one-week for headbutting Josh Carr and Troy Chaplin two weeks for striking Daniel Rich.

Thursday, 25 June 2009

The power has re-signed defender Troy Chaplin until the end of 2012.

"With Troy and Alipate Carlile both signed up, we've got two key defenders to build our backline around long term," football operations manager Peter Rohde said.

"Troy's still got some areas to improve on, but he's shown a great work ethic and we're looking forward to him continuing his improvement here at Port Adelaide.

"Troy brings great character to the club and is an important part of the culture among our younger players here at the Power."

Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin has added his voice to calls to re-appoint coach Mark Williams.

"I'd love for it to be Choco because he's been great in the six years I've been here," Chaplin said of the Power's next coach.

"Coming from a basketball background, he has taught me a lot about the game and he's been great for my individual development. He's put a lot of time into players and into the team as well. The preparation he puts in week in and week out is fantastic.

"No disrespect to any other clubs and I don't know what other coaches are like, but I'd probably say Choco is one of the best around."

Sunday, 7 June 2009

Troy Chaplin responded to a rev-up from Power coach Mark Williams to play his best game for the season against Fremantle.

"From Monday's meeting with me" one-on-one" Troy was very much assured that he better play a hell of a lot better than he did and with a whole lot more desire and I thought he delivered that in spades tonight," Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams said.

"He got a cut on the eye and, as I said to him after the game, every time he looks at that eye he's going to remember one of the great games he played on a really courageous night."

Monday, 27 April 2009

Port Adelaide's Troy Chaplin can accept a reprimand for striking St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt.

Wednesday, 8 April 2009

Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin insists the players didn't get ahead of themselves against the Eagles after their round-one victory over the Bombers.

Saturday, 16 February 2008

Troy Chaplin suffers a break in his hand in Port Adelaide's pre-season loss to the Blues and is expected to miss a month.

Power coach Mark Williams says Chaplin's absence will mean a re-think of Port Adelaide's defence.

"Preparing the backline for round one without Troy will be difficult," Williams said.

"Troy is an important player to us. Toby Thurstans will play next week so that helps us, but it doesn't get them all together before the start of the season."
