Adelaide appoints Daniel Jackson as the club's new leadership development manager. Jackson, who holds a Masters of Science, Performance Psychology from the University of Edinburgh, will oversee and facilitate leadership development and training for players across the AFL, AFLW and SANFL teams, as well as football department staff. "Dan is a highly motivated individual with a diverse and relevant background working with organisations, both here in Australia and abroad," Crows head of football Adam Kelly said. "He is held in high regard by everyone we have spoken to within the AFL industry, as well as his corporate clients, for his ability to coach individuals on their leadership capability and traits. "The way in which he can support leaders in bringing together teams of people to optimise performance is also important. He will be a valuable resource and support for all of our leaders in the football department and broader club."

Richmond has acted quickly following its elimination final defeat, cutting seven players from its list, including forward Aaron Edwards. Brett O'Hanlon and Brad Helbig have also been delisted, as well as rookies Orren Stephenson, Ben Darrou, Cadeyn Williams and Todd Banfield. They join retiring pair Jake King and Daniel Jackson, taking the total list turnover to nine ahead of the upcoming trade and free agency period. "We'd like to thank all of these players for their hard work during their time at the Richmond Football Club," Tigers football manager Dan Richardson said. "They have each made their own contribution to the club and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours."

Dan Jackson has announced his immediate retirement because his "body hasn't got any fight left". Jackson was named in the Tigers' 25-man squad to face Port Adelaide in Sunday's elimination final, but told his teammates on Friday morning that he was bowing out of football due to injury. "I have decided it would be best for myself, and for our footy club, that I retire," Jackson said. "I didn't want to leave myself in a position where I spent my final time as a footballer not being able to perform to a level that I'd expect of myself and, more importantly, to a level that the footy club needs from me." Richmond football manager football Dan Richardson said the club wasn't shocked by the decision given Jackson's injury battles this season. "We've been aware of his challenges this year trying to get his body right, obviously there's physical and also mental challenges with that," Richardson said. "So we weren't shocked by the decision, but in the end obviously that got the better of him and he's made a decision that it's all over for him. "After a great year last year winning the Jack Dyer Medal, obviously Dan was hoping to repeat that, but injuries have got the better of him this year. "In the end he's made a really selfless decision. He wasn't confident in his body – not only next year – but even right now."

Jack Riewoldt and Dylan Grimes are dropped from Richmond's 2014 leadership group to be headed by Trent Cotchin. Brett Deledio is again vice-captain with ruckman Ivan Maric and 2013 best and fairest winner Dan Jackson also voted into the group. Former Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin is the new addition in his second season as a Tiger. "Given the improved maturity of the team, we believe a five-player leadership group is a sufficient representation of the playing list," Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said. "We are proud of the way Trent embraced the captaincy in his first year, and we're confident he will continue to be a strong leader on and off the field, along with Brett as vice-captain."

A mindset of playing in 2013 as if it was his last season led to Daniel Jackson winning Richmond's best and fairest award. "I thought it was absolutely going to be my last season so my mindset was that I was going to go and have some fun, on and off the field. Just relax more and enjoy it," Jackson said. "Funnily enough, that led to me playing better football. "I went away at the end of the year and I thought, 'What am I going to change?', and the answer was, 'Not too much'. "I've just been trying to enjoy myself and it's not hard around here; we have such a great group of blokes, the coaches are fantastic and everyone enjoys being around the footy club."

Daniel Jackson says a cap on rotations will put players under greater risk of injury. "The rules and all these little interpretations along the way, it seems to me that they've been put in place to make the game faster and now we're saying the game's too fast and we need to slow it down," Jackson said. "Well, why did we go down that path in the first place when all you're doing now is getting players who are at elite fitness and fatiguing them? "For mine, I see the risk of injury as a little bit of a concern."

Daniel Jackson wins the Jack Dyer medal as Richmond's best and fairest for 2013 and says the desire to play and win a final with the club is his biggest motivation going into 2014 and beyond. "When I walked off the field at the end of the season, I was left with a big desire and a big hunger – something I've never felt before," he said. "That was an unbelievable feeling. I've played for 10 years now and that gave me an adrenalin rush and a smile like I've never felt before. "It's left a real spot we're going to have to fill in next year, so I know we're going to get bigger and better."

Melbourne chief executive Peter Jackson says he is confident Jack Watts will remain at the club next year. "I've had a couple of conversations with Jack, already, and I think in the last four or five weeks, I think he feels a bit better in his head," Jackson said. "I think he's a lot better in his mind and his form over the last four or five weeks has shown that."

Daniel Jackson says he supports the AFL's illicit drugs policy. "We are probably one of the most advanced sports when it comes to testing for illicit drugs," Jackson said. "We put a hand up to say we are prepared to be tested outside of competition for illicit drugs and hence that is why it is a three-strike process. It's all about rehabilitation. It's not about catching players."

Daniel Jackson says overcoming hamstring tendonitis has enabled him to grow as a player this season. "I think the last two years I was held back a lot by hamstring tendonitis," Jackson said. "While I could get out there and play, it was really frustrating not being able to train as much as I needed to and perform physically how I knew I could. "I'm clear of that, I feel fit and healthy, and it's actually been really good after 10 years to be in a side that's ahead of the ledger and looking to play finals."

Daniel Jackson says that while his first 100 games have been hard, he sees improvement ahead for his young Tigers. "Another 100 [games] would be a big call … but I'm more confident now than I have been for the whole time I've been at the club," he said. "We've got the right people and there's something I've picked up over the years - if you get the right people with the right character, they're going to find a way to get the job done."

Richmond's Daniel Jackson says a second break during the season would help players cope with the frenetic pace of the game. "The split round certainly came at a good time during the year but I would be a massive advocate to have the dual split round, maybe one in round eight and one in round 16 because that extra couple of days recovery is paramount when it comes to this time of year," Jackson said. "Speaking personally I'm sore every week. I've been battling through and haven't been training that much. A lot of other guys are very similar."

Daniel Jackson says Alex Rance's attack on the footy should be emulated by the Tigers, despite his broken cheekbone. "He does it all the time, and no doubt when he comes back he'll be doing it again and again. It won't be something that fazes him," Jackson said. "He just epitomises how you should attack the footy."
