State coroner John Cain recommends limiting contact training sessions and implementing concussion spotters and independent medical practitioners after an inquest into the death of former AFL player and professional boxer, Shane Tuck.

"The AFL continues to prioritise the health and safety of our players at all levels of the game and the AFL will now take time to formally review the recommendations of Judge Cain that were largely focussed on reducing repetitive head trauma in our game," a statement from the AFL said in response to the coroner's findings.

Shane Tuck says he will retire at the end of the season and hopes to still play a part in the finals.

"The club hasn't played finals for 12 years so I'd love to be part of it, and hopefully I get a spot somewhere along the line," Tuck said.

"I've been contemplating [retirement] the last couple of years with things happening along the way, but this year things haven't really gone to plan.

"The boys are playing really well so there's not much of a spot left for me.

"After the GWS game, the boys played really well and I got dropped for that one so I thought it was probably time to call it quits."

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says midfielder Shane Tuck, who has been sidelined since round seven, will play a significant role for the Tigers as finals approaches.

"We're looking forward to him having an impact in the later stages of the year … he's an important player for us when he's up and going," Hardwick said.

"We always know the start of the year for 'Tucky' is slowest, but when the stoppage numbers increase as they have, that's when he comes to the fore.

"He's a proud player, he's a good player, and he'll fight his way back. At VFL level he's too good, so he'll show that on the weekend."

Shane has worked as hard as anyone to earn his place in the Richmond team and the consistency of his performances this year has been outstanding," football manager Craig Cameron said.

30-year old Richmond midfielder Shane Tuck doesn't want to talk contracts until the end of the season, preferring his football to speak for itself.

"I've got a pretty strong mindset at the moment," he said.

"I don't want to talk contracts; I just want to play every week. Whatever happens happens, mate."

Hawthorn great Michael Tuck has urged clubs to give his son Travis a second chance after Travis was dropped from the Hawks following three positive drug tests by the AFL.

"He's made a mistake but he had a good year this year and he's getting himself fit and doing well," Michael Tuck said.

"I think he had a lot of footy left in him. He might have to work harder because he has to prove himself all over again but that's part of the deal."

Richmond coach Jade Rawlings won't disclose why prolific midfielder Shane Tuck was recently dropped.

"I'm not going to talk about Shane's deficiencies through the media," Rawlings said.

"It wasn't easy to drop him, because he's actually a really good person and I played with him at Hawthorn, so I've known him for a long time."

"He's gone back with a fantastic attitude and tried to put in place the things we've asked him to improve on."
