Injuries have prompted Eagles Adam Selwood and Mark Nicoski to announce their retirements at the age of 29. "I ended up getting a back injury that's held me back a fair bit this year. And I just couldn't hit the heights I needed to. It affected my form," Selwood said. "I guess you never really know when the game taps you on the shoulder, and it did that night at AAMI Stadium because I never got where an Eagles jumper ever again," Nicoski said.

"The medical staff has devised a modified and controlled program for the next eight weeks, which means I would not be ready to play until round seven," Nicoski said. "I will be placed on the long-term injury list during that period and I look forward to having a positive impact on the West Coast Eagles season after that time. "There has not been a setback per se, it's just a matter of backing it off a little over the next couple of months, managing and manipulating my training loads."

"That's the hard part, keeping the position," Hill said. "It's a tough gig, but everyone wants that spot and we're all going to fight for it pre-season. I think it's just going to motivate the boys to perform that one step better."

"In the best interests of my 'hammy' and it's ability to heal properly, the club and I have chosen to avoid forcing a return this season," Nicoski said. "It gives me the opportunity to rest it adequately and ensure 2013 is a successful one for myself and WCE."

"He had a bad muscle spasm and subsequent tests have shown he's damaged that repair and it needs to be re-repaired," Eagles coach John Worsfold said. "He's obviously pretty devastated. It sets him back hopefully only a week or two. It's his responsibility as part of this club to do the best rehab he can and be available to play good footy for us later in the year."

"As much as you don't like to admit it at the time, when you look back you can see that there were elements of your game that change," he said. "I probably lost a bit of speed and agility, which were things that were really important in my game. That came back over a couple of years, but I was hit with a back injury and then my shoulder again, so it's been a bit of a bumpy ride."
