Marc Murphy Biography

Tuesday, 14 December 2021

Former Carlton captain Marc Murphy acknowledges that the second half of his decorated career never reached the heights of success that he had expected, and said the club made "definitely the wrong decision" when it sacked Brett Ratten as coach at the end of 2012 to appoint Mick Malthouse.

"It was probably the most lonely I've ever been, to be honest with you. There were times I just hated turning up to the footy club, which is sad to say when you spend a lot of your life at a place where you should love, and I'd loved for quite a fair bit of my time there," Murphy told the Dyl and Friends podcast, hosted by his former Carlton teammate, Dylan Buckley.

Murphy said he found Malthouse to be a "very autocratic leader" and the pair had a strained relationship from the moment the legendary coach anointed the star player as skipper ahead of the 2013 season.

"I just think his time at Carlton, I don't think he was really in it for the right reasons and once it all turned pear-shaped, it was all about him, unfortunately, at the end and I was left to be thrown under the bus quite a bit," Murphy said.

"He was obviously a terrific coach but unfortunately at Carlton for us, and for me, and for the boys who were working so hard, it didn't work out."

Tuesday, 10 August 2021

Marc Murphy will play his 300th and final game this weekend, having informed the playing group he will retire after becoming just the sixth Blues player to ever reach the landmark milestone.

"When you look at the names who have played 300 games for the football club, it's obviously pretty humbling," Murphy said.

"The club has a really special place in my heart, so to be able to play 300 games here, it's awesome. My family is really proud and speaking to the boys before, it's a bit emotional reaching that milestone."

Monday, 7 June 2021

295-game veteran Marc Murphy's journey to 300 may prove to be a challenge as the Blues contemplate looking towards youth with their hopes of a finals berth fading in 2021.

"My main motivation is to play in a successful side, that's why I'm still going. I just want to play a role in that and enjoy playing footy," Murphy said.

"If I get [to 300 games] it would be pretty nice, but at the moment I'm just trying to focus on getting a game week-to-week and trying to play my role."

Sunday, 30 May 2021

Marc Murphy is no longer an automatic selection according to Blues coach David Teague declares after Carlton suffered another fadeout loss to Sydney to slump to a 4-7 record.

The 294-game veteran has moved from his usual onball role to play forward more this season, but lost his place in the starting 22 after Jack Martin recovered from a PCL injury.

"There will come a stage where if you get two guys on level pegging, you generally go the younger guy, but if one of the older players is ahead of the other guy then we're picking the team to win," Teague said.

Wednesday, 13 January 2021

The AFL has announced 12 new life members will be inducted at its annual general meeting in March.

Among them are Jack Riewoldt, Shannon Hurn, Ken Hinkley, Travis Boak, Tom Hawkins, Marc Murphy, Harry Taylor, Justin Westhoff, and Matthew Clarke.

Monday, 17 February 2020

Just a year after winning the NAB AFL Rising Star award, teenage sensation Sam Walsh has joined Carlton's leadership group.

Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty have been named co-captains for the second straight year, flanked by veterans Marc Murphy and Ed Curnow.

Another former No.1 draft pick, Jacob Weitering, and veteran defender Liam Jones join Walsh as the three new additions to the seven-man group.

"This is a significant step in the growth of our football club with our emerging generation of talent now ready to step into senior leadership positions," Docherty said.

"Weiters, Jonesy and Walshy are exceptional leaders in everything they do, whether it be on the training track, during games and living the values of our football club ? that is why they have earned their place in the leadership group.

"All three of them are born for the role, are quality Carlton people and we are excited to see them continue to grow as footballers and as individuals."

Monday, 20 May 2019

Marc Murphy will miss several matches after suffering fractured ribs in a collision with Greater Western Sydney ruckman Shane Mumford.

Murphy had just knocked the ball on when Mumford came through with a heavy bump, collecting the Blue's ribs with his thigh.

Monday, 2 July 2018

Marc Murphy commits to a new two-year deal with Carlton to remain at the club until the end of 2020.

"I'd spent 13 years here. Would it be a hollow feeling going somewhere else and doing that? I'm keen to stick it out here and try to be part of something special. We're certainly building a list that ultimately can get to that stage," Murphy said.

"I think it was important to sit down and have a think about what is important in my life and in my footy career. Ultimately, I thought staying here and being captain is a really important role that I hold dear. I wanted to finish off as a Carlton player for the rest of my career."

Saturday, 23 June 2018

Carlton coach Brendon Bolton admits he is still unsure if Marc Murphy will be at the club in 2019.

"As long as Murph is giving, that's all I care about. Is he giving to our club? Categorically yes. Is he a wanted player? Categorically yes," Bolton said.

"I know what the free agency market is there for. That's what it's designed to do, for players to explore. We're really hopeful and wanting that he stays."

Saturday, 26 May 2018

Marc Murphy will be sidelined for up to a month after scans revealed damage to the plantar fascia area of his left foot.

Tuesday, 17 April 2018

Carlton confirm that Marc Murphy will miss the next month with the injury to his left plantar fascia.

Saturday, 14 April 2018

Marc Murphy withdraws from Carlton's match against North Melbourne after aggravating a plantar fascia injury during the on-field warm-up.

"In the warm up, it sort of popped on me a little bit, which can sometimes be a good thing with a plantar fascia," Murphy said.

"Maybe it might be a one-week or two-week thing, I'm not too sure yet, I'll know more after the scan."

Wednesday, 31 January 2018

Marc Murphy will skipper the Blues for a sixth consecutive season in 2018.

Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty are Murphy's new deputies in an eight-man leadership group including Kade Simpson, Ed Curnow and fresh faces Matthew Kreuzer, Alex Silvagni and Lachie Plowman.

Friday, 22 September 2017

Marc Murphy wins his second John Nicholls Medal as the Blues' best and fairest for 2017.

Murphy amassed 174 votes to edge out Sam Docherty (169) and Matthew Kreuzer (164).

"I'm enormously proud … to be a two-time winner of the John Nicholls Medal is pretty special," Murphy said.

"My family is probably enjoying it as well. I think my old man (John) won six best and fairests and my grandpa (Leo) won two, so I join them, which is good."

Monday, 7 August 2017

Dr David Young, who saved Tom Liberatore's 2016 season, has operated on Geelong captain Joel Selwood as the Cats bid to get their star midfielder back in time for finals.

The same syndesmosis injury finished Carlton captain Marc Murphy's season after round 12 last year and there has been scepticism that Selwood would be able to return in time for finals, as the Cats hope.

"The expectation with the surgery is that he'll be back running in three weeks," Cats football manager Steve Hocking said.

"From there, knowing Joel the way I do, he'll do everything he can within his powers to recover. He's shown throughout his career that he does recover really well."

Friday, 23 June 2017

Marc Murphy says the current era at the Blues is the most exciting he has experienced in over a decade at the club.

"As a bloke who has been around the footy club for 11 years now, I think the club is in as good a spot as it's ever been," Murphy told SEN radio.

"In the last 18 months, our supporters are really excited with what they're seeing. The footy club is going really well at the moment, it's a good place to be at."

Wednesday, 17 May 2017

Following the recent controversy with Marc Murphy being targeted by St Kilda players, Heath Shaw says sledging will always be a part of AFL and admits it can be hard not to overstep the mark in the heat of a match.

"You can't control the heat of the moment for players," Shaw said.

"During the game you are making a hundred decisions ... and sometimes a slip of the tongue or a comment comes out."

"It is a tough game and if you think it is going to get you an advantage then why not do it - but you obviously can't take it too far."

Monday, 15 May 2017

Reports of Carlton skipper Marc Murphy being the target of fierce sledging by St Kilda players continues to be a hot topic of discussion in the media.

However, both Carlton and St Kilda have told the AFL they don't want the Marc Murphy sledging furore taken further.

"The AFL has spoken to both clubs to confirm if any complaint may be lodged and we have been advised by both clubs they did not wish for any further action," an AFL spokesman said.

St Kilda's players have acknowledged their highly personal sledging of Marc Murphy crossed the line, with Jarryn Geary attempting to contact the Carlton captain in the fallout from an ugly clash at Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile, Murphy responded to the social media commentary on Monday night, saying comments were hurtful to his wife and showed a lack of respect to women.

It comes as St Kilda coach Alan Richardson revealed he had a phone conversation with Murphy earlier in the day.

"It's a private conversation, it's between 'Murph' and I," Richardson told Fox Footy.

"I think he was appreciative. What you do have to remember (is) that Murph and I have got a bit of history; I worked with Murph for a couple of years."

Carlton and St Kilda officials have spoken following the ugly incident, which saw an incensed Murphy lash out at Carlisle as he lay injured on the ground just before three-quarter time.

That sparked a large melee instigated by Geary, who left a message with Murphy on Monday.

Wednesday, 8 February 2017

At the age of 30, Dennis Armfield has been added to Carlton's leadership group for the first time, taking the spot of the retired Andrew Walker.

Marc Murphy has retained the captaincy at the Blues with veteran defender Kade Simpson the vice-captain for the third year overall.

Patrick Cripps, Sam Docherty, Bryce Gibbs and Ed Curnow round out the seven-player leadership group.

"In 2016, we set about building leadership density across our list. This year, we are sticking to the roadmap and ensuring there is a consistent level of leadership across the board," Blues coach Brendon Bolton said.

"With only one change to our leadership group for 2017, we are building on the foundations that were set last season."

Friday, 19 August 2016

Carlton will put Marc Murphy on ice for the final two matches after the skipper failed a fitness test to return to the senior side.

"It's been really frustrating for Murph and us, it's one of those injuries that's just niggled and stayed around and we tested him this week and he's still just not quite right," Carlton coach Brendon Bolton said.

"So it's probably the end for Murph this year so he can go and have a really strong pre-season."

Wednesday, 10 August 2016

Carlton remain hopeful skipper Marc Murphy will recover from an ankle injury to play again by the end of the season.

"That syndesmosis (injury) is one that's really niggling and has been really frustrating, so it's hard to put a timeline on," Blues coach Brendon Bolton said.

"It's just about how he's responding week to week, but 'Murph's' starting to train with the group now so we're really hopeful before the end of the year he plays.

"Marc's our captain and we do all we can to prepare him to play, and if and when he's fit to play then we'll play him."

Friday, 8 July 2016

Carlton remains unsure when captain Marc Murphy will return from a right ankle injury.

Murphy was hurt in the round 10 win against Geelong but hasn't been on the field since.

The skipper has consistently been listed as being two or three weeks away since he was originally hurt.

"It's one of those syndesmosis ankles that can vary. It's really difficult to give you an exact timeline on it," Carlton coach Brendon Bolton said.

"We'd love to be able to put an exact timeline on every injury, but with some of them, and that type of ankle injury, you can't. It just depends how it responds."

Wednesday, 29 June 2016

Carlton skipper Marc Murphy is still three weeks away from an AFL return, with his ankle injury healing slower than expected.

Wednesday, 1 June 2016

Marc Murphy will miss at least two weeks after badly rolling his ankle in the first quarter of the Blues' 19-point win over Geelong.

Friday, 13 May 2016

Carlton coach Brendon Bolton praises Marc Murphy on his improved leadership as captain of the club.

"One thing I've been really pleased with is how much the leaders and 'Murph' in particular have accepted me and some new ways of thinking," Bolton said.

"It's about emphasising messages from the coaches, it's about investing in other youngsters, and day to day all our leaders are doing that.

"If they can become an extension of the coaching group, that's really important to us."

Monday, 15 February 2016

Marc Murphy is reappointed as Carlton captain for 2016, but the Blues have overhauled their leadership group with the skipper and Bryce Gibbs the only survivors from the 2015 line-up.

In the new-look team, veteran Kade Simpson will take over as sole vice-captain from Murphy's 2015 joint deputies Bryce Gibbs and Michael Jamison.

Youngsters Patrick Cripps, 20, and Sam Docherty, 22, are among five additions to the 2016 group, as the Blues' next generation of leaders begins to emerge.

Hard-running midfielder Ed Curnow, 26, also joins the leadership team for the first time, while former members Simpson, 31, and Andrew Walker, 29, return after one-year absences.

Walker said Murphy had always loomed as the logical captaincy choice.

"After the tough year that we had and the amount of scrutiny that he copped I think the natural thing would have been for somebody to go into their shell," Walker said.

"But he has always stood up and really been at the forefront for the Carlton footy club. He copped a lot of scrutiny, but I think the way he was able to come out of it and the amount of confidence he's still got to lead the footy club is going to be great for us going forward."

Friday, 12 February 2016

Zach Tuohy has thrown his support behind Marc Murphy to retain the Blues' captaincy.

"From my point of view I'd like to see Murph run on as captain," Tuohy said.

"I think he's had a tough time over the last few years, he's been much-maligned and the way he's held himself the last few years … he's a player I respect incredibly."

Tuesday, 15 December 2015

Carlton skipper Marc Murphy has suffered a hiccup with his pre-season program after undergoing a minor operation last week on the shoulder he had reconstructed in September.

Murphy experienced some discomfort with his left shoulder at training and he has remained in Melbourne to recover while his teammates have travelled to the Gold Coast for their pre-season training camp.

The Blues are awaiting further test results before issuing a prognosis for the 28-year-old, who is set to link up with his teammates at their Queensland camp later this week.

Tuesday, 8 December 2015

New Carlton coach Brendan Bolton has said that he's open-minded on the future of the team's leadership structure, but Marc Murphy says he wants to continue as skipper in 2016.

"If the boys want me to, and the coaching staff do, I'd love to lead this footy club," Murphy said.

"It's a terrific honour to be the captain of the Carlton Football Club, we've been through some tough times and hopefully we can start turning that around."

Monday, 13 April 2015

After two listless defeats to open the season, Blues skipper Marc Murphy says every Carlton player needs to strongly evaluate whether he has the desire to be successful at the club.

In both the defeat to the Eagles and the round one loss to Richmond, Carlton has started well before being comprehensively beaten.

"As individuals within the side everyone's got to have a hard look at themselves and work out whether they really want to be here and want to be successful," Murphy said.

"And as captain I've got to lead that and make sure the boys are following and we're doing everything we can to make sure we're being successful."

Tuesday, 24 February 2015

Marc Murphy is ruled out for the next three weeks with a calf strain.

Murphy experienced calf tightness during the Blues intra-club match, with scans later revealing he had suffered a calf strain that was expected to sideline him for two to three weeks.

"Although this is unfortunate, Marc will still be able to take part in the final two NAB Challenge games to enable him to be fully fit for round one against Richmond," Carlton football manager Andrew McKay said.

Monday, 16 February 2015

On the eve of his third AFL season as Carlton skipper, Marc Murphy says he's become a better leader.

"It's been a tough few years, but I think I've grown quite a bit," Murphy said.

"Mick (Malthouse) has been great for my development as a captain.

"I'm in as good a place as I've ever been to lead the club and I've got great support with these two guys.

"Their leadership over the last few years has been great."

Tuesday, 2 December 2014

Carlton cuts it's leadership group from eight to five.

Sam Rowe is a new addition to the group while Andrew Carrazzo, Kade Simpson, Andrew Walker and the delisted Brock McLean have left the group.

Existing leadership group members include Marc Murphy, who will continue as captain, Michael Jamison, Bryce Gibbs and Lachie Henderson.

Tuesday, 25 November 2014

Blues skipper Marc Murphy says the players and coaches had lost trust in Jeff Garlett and Mitch Robinson by the end of last season, leaving the club with no alternative but to part company with the talented pair.

"We tried to help those two guys enormously over the journey. It's just, how many chances do you keep on giving certain individuals?" Murphy said.

"We didn't want to set an example of playing guys like that, especially for other young guys at the club doing everything right and not being played. (Setting that example) was a cultural thing as well.

"I think it was a good lesson learnt by the whole list about individuals aren't going to be bigger than the team."

Monday, 14 April 2014

Carlton skipper Marc Murphy says leadership is not an issue at the club despite the Blues having started 2014 with four straight losses.

"On the weekend I thought we were talking enough and communicating. It's probably a bit hard to say, from a media point of view, who's speaking out there when you're not out there yourself," Murphy said following a demoralizing loss to Melbourne.

"But as a leader of the club myself I think the voice has been pretty encouraging over the last couple of weeks when I suppose Essendon was a really bad week for us and the weekend wasn't great for us either.

"On the weekend blokes were starting to speak up and trying to change things out there and that's what we need more of."

Saturday, 12 April 2014

Carlton president Stephen Kernahan says Blues skipper Marc Murphy needs more support from his teammates and cannot be compared to some of the game's best captains.

"You look out in the League and I think he gets compared to Jobe Watson, Luke Hodge (and) Selwood," Kernahan told SEN's Crunch Time.

"I look at Selwood when I go to the football – I'm not talking about 'Murph' here – but when they're under the pump, him, (Jimmy) Bartel and (Steve) Johnson for five minutes, their attack on the footy (is ferocious).

"That's where I think our leaders and our team need to get better."

Friday, 21 March 2014

Blues captain Marc Murphy, vice-captain Kade Simpson and midfielder Bryce Gibbs are reported to have lost money in a failed property development at Mt. Eliza set-up by director Richard Newton.

The venture was affected by the Global Financial Crisis several years ago with the players and Newton losing a collective six-figure amount.

Thursday, 6 March 2014

Marc Murphy signs a four-year deal with Carlton that will keep him at the club until the end of 2018.

"I didn't want it (speculation) to hang over my head or the club's head for this season, so I think the timing of it has been great," Murphy said.

"To get it over and done with before the season is very important for myself and the club."

Thursday, 30 January 2014

Carlton has announced an expanded eight-man leadership group for 2014 to be headed by second-year captain Marc Murphy.

Andrew Carrazzo and Kade Simpson will be joint vice-captains, while defender Michael Jamison returns to the group after 12 months in the role of deputy vice-captain.

As well as Jamison, Bryce Gibbs, Lachie Henderson, Brock McLean and Andrew Walker are new inclusions for 2014.

"We have the experienced leadership of Simpson and Carrazzo, together with Brock McLean who is a strong voice both on and off the field," Blues general manager of football operations Andrew McKay said.

"After 12 months out of the leadership group, Bryce Gibbs and Michael Jamison return, which is great to see, because they're two very important and respected figures within the playing group.

"We're also pleased to see Andrew Walker and Lachie Henderson step up – both have come off a terrific season in 2013, finishing second and third respectively in the best and fairest."

Saturday, 29 June 2013

Marc Murphy says he hopes to return to the side to face Collingwood, less than three weeks after suffering a broken cheekbone following a collision with Hawk Luke Hodge.

"It was in the cheekbone area and I went into a bit of shock ... it was the most painful injury that I have had to date,'' Murphy said.

"It wasn't good, but it is feeling pretty good now.

"I came off second best, but will only miss a week or two of football, which is a good result.''

Saturday, 15 June 2013

Marc Murphy is set to miss a month with a fractured cheekbone after a collision with Hawk Luke Hodge.

Murphy came off second-best after the collision in the second quarter, and was subsequently taken to hospital for scans in the third quarter.

Sunday, 24 March 2013

Despite being contracted until the end of 2014, Marc Murphy says he'd be happy to sign a new deal now.

"I've got another year after this AFL season. But if the club is happy to sign me on again, I'm happy to stay there for as long as they want me to," Murphy said.

"I love it here. I'd be happy to stay until I'm 35," Murphy said. "There are no issues of me wanting to go anywhere."

Saturday, 9 February 2013

Carlton will decide between Andrew Carrazzo, Marc Murphy and Kade Simpson for the captaincy with each player being rotated for the leadership role in the opening three rounds of the NAB Cup.

Carrazzo says former skipper Chris Judd will be invaluable resource to all three players.

"He's got a wealth of knowledge, having played under John Worsfold (at West Coast), and his experience, and being in a successful team he knows what it takes to get to the top level," Carrazzo said about Judd.

"Juddy's a fantastic example. He's someone who's always willing to offer his experience and his know-how. In a way, we're lucky that Juddy's still here and playing such a big part still, so he's able to help us along."

Tuesday, 11 December 2012

Carlton has named five players to its leadership group including Nick Duigan who joins Andrew Carrazzo, Kade Simpson, Jarrad Waite and Marc Murphy.

Bryce Gibbs and Michael Jamison, leaders in 2012, have been left out of the group, along with former skipper Chris Judd who has decided to focus solely on football in 2013.

Wednesday, 5 December 2012

Brock McLean says Chris Judd should relinquish the captain and allow players such as Andrew Carazzo or Marc Murphy to assume the leadership mantle at Carlton.

"He's probably the best player at the club. Personally I think he's best off focussing on his footy, but that's only my opinion," McLean said of Judd.

"The two standouts for me are Andrew Carrazzo and Marc Murphy. 'Carrotts' is probably a little bit more experienced and bit older than Murph, he's got a really good hold on things and the way he talks to the group both in a positive manner and a demanding manner is something that we need.

"Marc Murphy, his best way of leading is leading by example and his performance the last two years when he has been out on the park have been pretty outstanding."

Friday, 13 July 2012

Marc Murphy will make his return from a shoulder injury against North Melbourne in round 16 after missing the last 8 weeks.

Tuesday, 19 June 2012

Carlton has been fined $7,500 by the AFL for tweets by injured players Marc Murphy, Jarrad Waite and Jeremy Laidler that were critical of umpires during the Blues' clash with West Coast.

"The AFL will not tolerate public denigration or humiliation of umpires as we continue to face very real problems with the retention of umpires throughout Australia," general manager football operations Adrian Anderson said.

"A player's use of social media to make comments around umpiring will be subject to the AFL's rules in exactly the same way as comments made in a formal interview or any other media environment, as the AFL competition must continue to set a positive example on conduct towards umpires."

Monday, 18 June 2012

Calrton midfielder Marc Murphy is repentant over the tweet he sent that was critical of umpires which read, "Ruined a good game those blokes".

"As soon as I did it I knew I was going to be in a bit of strife," Murphy said after speaking with the umpires following his tweet.

"It was a stupid thing to do. It didn't need to come out the way it did because you don't want it to affect the ranks of junior umpires coming through."

Friday, 25 May 2012

Marc Murphy reveals that he has two fractures in his shoulder and is uncertain if he will play again this season.

"I've got a couple of fractures in the shoulder joint," Murphy said.

"So they went in on Monday and just cleaned it out, so I've got to wait four weeks now for those fractures to heal up.

"The doc is pretty confident I'll play this year, at what point [will depend on] how it's all healed up, so I've just got to play the waiting game at the moment."

Monday, 21 May 2012

Scans confirm Blues midfielder Marc Murphy has fractured his shoulder and will undergo arthroscopic surgery to confirm the extent of the damage.

"We will not have an accurate indication of how long Marc will be out of action until the surgery is performed however we do know he will not be available until after our bye in round 13," Carlton football operations manager Andrew McKay said.

Sunday, 20 May 2012

Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy sprains an AC joint after colliding heavily with Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield.

"We're not sure in regards to how significant [the injury is]. He'll go and get scans and we'll find out the full result tomorrow," Carlton coach Brett Ratten said.

"He'll definitely miss next week, whether it's two, four ... I don't know what the outcome is just yet. He'll miss some footy - I don't know how significant."

Wednesday, 28 September 2011

Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy has taken out the AFL Coaches Association's Player of the Year award.

"This year has definitely been my most consistent," Murphy said.

"I've had a lot of help from a lot of people, the coaches sitting on my table tonight. They've had a big impact on my footy career. Hopefully, it's a stepping stone into next year … and that we can play more finals footy in the next couple of years."

Thursday, 9 June 2011

Carlton star midfielder Marc Murphy has re-signed for three years with the club.

"We are delighted that Marc has committed to continuing his career with Carlton. He is an outstanding young man and has shown continued improvement in his five years at the club," Carlton football operations general manager Steven Icke said.

"We know he will continue to improve and enjoy a long and sensational career at Carlton."

Tuesday, 24 May 2011

Monday, 14 February 2011

Marc Murphy nears signing a contract extension at Carlton, thereby ending speculation of a move to the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

"It's a great club and we're getting a group now which can push for premiership success over the next few years," he said.

"We've been through some pretty tough times and we're now getting some blokes in place, and also the structure with our coaches. I'm looking forward to being part of the club in the years ahead."

Tuesday, 18 January 2011

Carlton has expanded its leadership group to seven by adding Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Jordan Russell.

It's a pretty stronger indicator that you've got something to offer the group and I'm pretty proud of that. I'm looking forward to improving my leadership skills and qualities by being in the leadership group," Gibbs said.

"I think I can bring some experience, the past four or five years and 100 games now, so it's time to step up as a consistent contributor to the team - and I think some of my opinions will help with some of the younger guys coming through," Murphy added.

Saturday, 29 May 2010

Carlton's Marc Murphy is keen to shake the 'young' tag as he approaches his 100th game.

"I'm in my fifth year now, so I'm starting to be a bit of a veteran around the club," Murphy said.

"We're so young down there. I was having a look at the average ages of teams and we're about 23. I'm turning 23 in a month-and-a-half, so I'll be right on that average age."

Saturday, 6 February 2010

Carlton's Marc Murphy says he will be 'managed' from the start of the season as he returns from hip surgery.

"I'll be managed a little bit more at the start of the season than I have been in the past. I'll probably get rotated a bit more than I usually would to keep me a bit fresher rather than staying out on the ground for extended periods," Murphy said.

"I probably won't be as fit as I was at the start of last season, but I'm sure I'll get it back a few games in."

Tuesday, 12 January 2010

Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy will undergo hip surgery later this week and miss the start of the club's NAB Cup campaign.

"Marc had been on a revised program since Christmas, and it was hoped that the injury would have responded to treatment," Carlton's football operations manager Steven Icke said.

"However, after further consultation with our medical staff it was decided that surgery was the best option."

Monday, 28 September 2009

Blues skipper Chris Judd wins his second John Nicholls Medal as Carlton's best and fairest, edging out Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs.

Former Richmond coach Terry Wallace accuses several Carlton players of being downhill skiers after they were comprehensively beaten by Adelaide.

"Carlton have got some midfielders who've got to learn how to defend, they only want to play one direction and I'm quite happy to name them. I think (Marc) Murphy, (Heath) Scotland, (Nick) Stevens, (Chris) Judd - those four guys just don't defend," Wallace said on SEN.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten did not agree with Wallace's assessment of his playing group.

"I heard a little bit of it. That's up to Terry. That's his opinion and he can have it," a Ratten said.

"Terry may have made an observation that was part of last week's game, but I don't think you can put that down to a season's performance.

"It's very unfair to our group."

Carlton coach Brett Ratten praises Marc Murphy's performance against North Melbourne after the midfielder tallies 23 possessions despite just managing to take the field following a bout of flu.

"He was in doubt a little bit to play, which I'm amazed because he virtually crawled out of bed yesterday to train and to get through and do what he's done I think is a super effort," Ratten said.

"He had the flu but he got it later than earlier in the week which hindered him coming into the game."

Daniel Kerr is on the sidelines for a match after an attempt to have his hit on Carlton's Marc Murphy characterised as a bump, rather than a strike, was tossed out by the AFL Tribunal last night.

Kerr told the tribunal by videolink that in knocking Murphy to the ground at the opening bounce of last Friday night's game, he was merely copying an earlier hit by Bret Thornton upon Matt Rosa.

"I proceeded to bump the closest Carlton player in the same fashion, and that happened to be Marc Murphy."

Carlton is confident young gun Marc Murphy will be fit to play Collingwood amid fears the star midfielder had broken his thumb.

"He hurt his thumb on the weekend, but it's nothing that's going to stop him from playing this weekend," Blues football manager Steven Icke said.

"He reported it at recovery the next day. He's a bit sore and it's a little bruised, but he's fine."
