Beau Muston's three goals as a defensive forward against Essendon could signal a new role for the talented Hawk after an injury-plagued start to his career during his earlier years.

"The last couple of weeks I've felt like I've done a pretty good job but I think it comes down to the coaches showing a lot of belief in me and giving me a big job. I'm happy to take it on," Muston said.

"The body's really good. I haven't had any troubles so fingers crossed and I'll try to get as many games as I can."

Debutant Beau Muston says his club's belief became a self-fulfilling prophecy after three knee reconstructions.

"When I did it last time in the NAB Cup against Adelaide I didn't know what to do. I was still contracted and while I was still contracted I was always going to do my best to get back," Muston said.

"The club showed faith in me and it's all worth it today."

While Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson says he was rapt with the contribution of first-gamer Beau Muston on Sunday against the Demons, insiders at the club were not surprised the once injury-plagued youngster performed so well in his first foray into AFL football.

"We obviously rate him very, very highly at our footy club," Clarkson said of Muston after the win.

"He had to work really hard to get his opportunity to play at the highest level, and hopefully it's just blue sky from this point on for him.

"He's a great character around our footy club, and these setbacks that he's had along the journey have made him really strong mentally, so hopefully that will mean that going forward he becomes a pretty damaging player for us."

Hawthorn's Beau Muston will finally play his first AFL game on Sunday after three knee reconstructions.

"You can only probably endure, at 21 or 22 years of age, a certain amount of mishap before you consider just tossing it all in. But such is the character of the lad he has persevered and is very diligent with his rehab," Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said.

Hawthorn is brightened by the news that previously injury-stricken Beau Muston set to play his first game after recovering from three knee-reconstructions.

Beau Muston is scheduled for a knee reconstruction after injuring his knee during the NAB Cup semi-final against the Crows.

This will be Muston's third reconstruction of his left knee with experts saying that his AFL career will now be in doubt.

"Each time you have a reco and then another reco, and this will be what we call a second revision, the options how you can do it technically become less," sports doctor Peter Larkins said.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson agreed with the grim assessment.

"It doesn't look good," Clarkson said. "We'll do whatever we can, if it's a bad one, to give him the support that he needs."
