Essendon coach James Hird says delisted forward Jay Neagle's has responded well to his axing and remains a chance for a rookie list spot.

"He's been training really well, doing some extra sessions and getting his body to where it needs to be to play AFL football," Hird said.

"We've set some standards he needs to meet and I'm pretty confident he'll meet those."

Essendon forward Jay Neagle has had his pre-season disrupted by groin surgery that will sideline him until January.

"He had some groin soreness after the season and we flew him to Sydney. The surgeon felt the best thing for him was rest and rehab. But it didn't appear to be working so he has had an operation," football manager Paul Hamilton said.
