The Brisbane Lions have terminated the contract of rookie-listed utility Albert Proud after he was charged with assaulting a police officer.

"The Brisbane Lions will no longer compromise our standards and expectations as we seek to build a strong culture for the long term benefit of all players and the Club as a whole," general manager of football operations Dean Warren said.

"Whilst Albert was extremely disappointed with the decision, he understood our position. We have offered Albert ongoing support to assist in his transition out of an AFL environment, which can often be a difficult time for some players." ¨¨

Brisbane Lions midfielder Albert Proud has been charged with assaulting a police officer and suspended by his club for an unspecified amount of time pending an investigation into the incident.

Albert Proud has taken some time away from football to deal with issues of a personal nature. His leave ob absence is granted by the Brisbane Lions football club.

Brisbane Lion Albert Proud has pleaded guilty to assault and must complete 100 hours community service.

Proud was involved in a glass-throwing incident at a Gold Coast establishment in February this year where two women were injured.

Proud has apologised to the two women and has also paid them $8,000 in compensation.

Brisbane Lion Albert Proud will be sentenced next month over a glassing attack in a Gold Coast nightclub.

The Courier-Mail reports Proud intends to plead guilty to two counts of assault stemming from an incident at Surfers Paradise nightspot Cocktails and Dreams, back in January.
