Matthew Lobbe Biography

Thursday, 29 August 2019

Carlton makes the first significant changes to its list ahead of what looms as an important off-season for the club by delisting five players.

Experienced ruckman Matthew Lobbe and forward Jarrod Garlett lead the list of players to depart the club, with youngsters Pat Kerr, Angus Schumacher and Kym LeBois also delisted.

Carlton trades for Port Adelaide out-of-favour big man Matthew Lobbe at the bargain-basement price of pick 95.

Lobbe, 28, had completed the third year of a five-year contract with the Power, and both parties had been keen to move on from that arrangement.

In those final three years at Alberton, Lobbe had played just 25 games, including none in 2017, as he slipped further back in the Power's ruck pecking order.

Wednesday, 4 October 2017

Forgotten Port Adelaide ruckman Matthew Lobbe will seek opportunities at another club in 2018.

Lobbe signed a contract extension at the end of 2014 to see him committed to Port until the end of 2019, after having put together a career-best season and helping the Power to a preliminary final.

Since then, the 28-year-old has played just 25 matches, including none in 2017.

"There's enough interest there to hopefully get something done for him and he just wants a new start, and show he can still play at the highest level," Lobbe's manager Michael Doughty told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

Port Adelaide retains Hamish Hartlett in the club's leadership group despite the midfielder being put up for trade at the end of 2016.

But Hartlett has lost the vice-captaincy, with young gun Ollie Wines taking over as the deputy to Travis Boak, who has been appointed captain for a fifth straight season.

Brad Ebert, Tom Jonas and Jackson Trengove complete the slimmed-down leadership group, while Jack Hombsch, Matthew Lobbe and Justin Westhoff have been omitted.

Trengove returns to the leadership group after not being a part of it this year.

Power chief executive Keith Thomas says Hamish Hartlett and Matthew Lobbe can return to their best form despite unsuccessfully being put on the trade table.

It's understood Hartlett, who is contracted to the Power until 2021, spoke to four clubs during a trip to Melbourne, while ruckman Lobbe, with three years to run on his deal, didn't attract much interest.

"They're professionals," Thomas said.

"I've spoken to Hamish and Matthew and all of the players through the summer and they understand it for what it is.

"You have to have those honest conversations, they've been had, now we approach the season with vigour and real optimism."

Thursday, 6 October 2016

Matthew Lobbe's bid to reignite his career elsewhere as a No. 1 ruckman appears in doubt, with rival clubs showing only lukewarm interest.

Lobbe, who will turn 28 in February, still has three years to run on his contract with the Power, but has twice been dropped to the SANFL over the past two seasons.

He also battled a knee injury this season that sidelined him for 10 games.

"We've obviously spoken to the club and he's still got three years to run on his contract, so the likelihood of him getting somewhere else is probably 50/50," Lobbe's manager Michael Doughty said.

"There's a few clubs interested, but nothing to write home about at the moment.

"He wants the opportunity to be lead ruck and obviously with Ryder coming back in, that opportunity is going to be limited."

Sunday, 1 May 2016

Port Adelaide will be sweating on the results of scans to Matthew Lobbe's knee after the ruckman went down in the SANFL.

The 27-year-old suffered a knock to his knee during the second quarter of Port Adelaide's 63-point loss to Sturt and did not take any further part in the match.

Wednesday, 30 March 2016

Port Adelaide skipper Travis Boak has tipped under-fire Power ruckman Matthew Lobbe to return to some solid form soon.

Lobbe copped a touch-up from young Saint Tom Hickey, who had 57 hit-outs and 20 disposals, in the Power's opening round win against St Kilda.

"Lobbes is a pretty strong person, so he doesn't listen to too much outside talk," Boak said.

"He loves that added pressure and that whole responsibility of being the only ruckman and taking control in the midfield.

"And he's one that if he is struggling he will let us know. And he's certainly not in that space."

Thursday, 25 February 2016

Hamish Hartlett is elevated to the post of stand-alone vice captain at Port Adelaide, acting as deputy to fourth-year skipper Travis Boak.

Hartlett replaced previous joint vice captains Brad Ebert and Matthew Lobbe, both of whom will remain in the leadership group.

"Since we really started playing what I would call 'Port Adelaide football' in the back half of last year, Hamish really showed the quality he can bring to our group on the field and also on the track," Power coach Ken Hinkley said.

"He has only grown further over this pre-season, and the confidence the players and coaches have in him is really shown through him becoming our vice-captain."

Tuesday, 2 February 2016

Following Paddy Ryder's ban by the CAS, Power skipper Travis Boak says he expects Matthew Lobbe to handle the majority of the club's ruck duties in 2016.

"He's the number one ruck at the club and has been for a number of years. He'll take the big load and then the other forwards will come and chip in," Boak said.

"We saw before Paddy came in how well he handled rucking by himself, and I know that he loves the challenge."

Wednesday, 11 February 2015

Travis Boak will again lead the Power in 2015 with Matthew Lobbe and Brad Ebert serving as vice-captains.

Angus Monfries and Robbie Gray have been replaced in the leadership by Ollie Wines.

Tom Jonas, Jackson Trengove and Hamish Hartlett will round out Port Adelaide's leadership group for the year.

Monday, 19 January 2015

Hamish Hartlett says the Power's ruck combination of Matthew Lobbe and Paddy Ryder can be the AFL's best.

"[Paddy's] already done some pretty exciting things – his athleticism around the ground is amazing and to see him and Matthew Lobbe compete and then come together on the same team…has been really exciting to watch," Hartlett said.

"They've got the work ethic to become [the best] and I reckon they'll really feed off each other."

Monday, 8 December 2014

Matthew Lobbe signs a four-year deal with Port Adelaide that will keep him at the club until the end of 2019.

"It was easy [to sign]; I love playing for this footy club, we've got some great people here, and great people leading the club," Lobbe said.

"I've got some great mates here and we're all committed to getting better."

Monday, 19 August 2013

Matthew Lobbe has signed a new contract to remain at Port Adelaide for another two years.

"I was never worried I was going to go anywhere else and I said before I love being at Port Adelaide, so it was a matter of timing," Lobbe said.

Lobbe has played 39 AFL games since making his debut in 2010 but his past month in particular has been exceptional.

"This year has been the most uninterrupted I've been injury-wise," he said.

"Having a big pre-season is really important and most of our playing group did that, so that's been one of the keys for me."

Saturday, 17 November 2012

Port Adelaide ruckman Matthew Lobbe hopes for a solid pre-season after being restricted by injuries over the last couple of years.

My running has always been something I've tried to use as an advantage but I probably haven't used it as well as I would have liked over the last couple of years," Lobbe said.

"The key for me is getting the majority of the next couple of months in and then carry that through to the season with a good headspace, especially for me after coming off the last few seasons where I didn't get a full pre-season."

Thursday, 5 July 2012

It has been a long and injured road for Matthew Lobbe, but the Port ruckman says he has learnt from the frustration of being on the sidelines.

"It was most frustrating in the first couple of weeks, knowing it'd be a while to come back," Lobbe said.

"As soon as that's over then you work out what you can do to get back as quick as possible and be effective.

"Anyone that's had long-term injuries tell you that you do learn a lot off the field about parts of your game that you need to get back into form straight away.

"For me it was about getting my competitiveness and hunt for the ball stuff straight away."

Tuesday, 17 January 2012

Port Adelaide has suffered a double whammy with Matthew Lobbe and Cameron Hitchcock sidelined for the rest of the pre-season.

"We might have been able to manage it in January and February, but it would have been a nightmare to do it all year, so we thought the best thing would be to knock it on the head right now," Power head coach Matthew Primus said about Lobbe's hip injury.

Wednesday, 16 November 2011

Port Adelaide recruit Brent Renouf says he and fellow ruckman Matthew Lobbe can work in tandem next season.

"I don't think there's any of that anymore. We'll be working as a good partnership this year," Renouf said.

"Lobbe came along pretty strongly in the last half of this year and I think I might just slide in and give him a chop out and we'll work well together as a partnership."

Friday, 14 October 2011

Port Adelaide's football operations manager Peter Rhode is excited by the signing of Brent Renouf who he believes will work well with youngster Matthew Lobbe.

"Matthew Lobbe played some pretty good footy for us in the second half of the year but with only one ruckman, invariably he got worn down," Rohde said.

"We really feel as though we need two ruckmen to be able to share the load evenly to give our young midfield a chance. They're similar ages, [have] similar experience, [and] we think the two of them can come through together and be a really good combination for us."

Tuesday, 8 February 2011

Port Adelaide rookie ruckmen Jarrad Redden and Daniel Bass will be given opportunities in the 2011 NAB Cup following a shoulder injury to Matthew Lobbe.

"A couple of our rucks, Jarrad Redden, will have a run around," Power coach Matthew Primus said.

"Matthew Lobbe unfortunately dislocated his shoulder on Saturday morning so we want to have a look at Redden and Daniel Bass, one of our rookies, give them a bit of time in the ruck. It's pretty important to have a look at those guys."

Saturday, 24 April 2010

Matthew Lobbe makes his AFL debut for Port Adelaide at Football Park with 3 disposals (3 handballs), 3 tackles and 10 hitouts in a 10-point win over St Kilda.

Friday, 23 April 2010

Port Adelaide coach is happy untried ruckman Matthew Lobbe will have to face off against the Saints in his first match.

"We felt that two genuine ruckmen going up against Dean probably meant that he needed a bit more help and that's what Matthew Lobbe will provide," Williams said.

"I know (Collingwood coach) Mick Malthouse often brings a new player into the Anzac Day game, so for Matthew Lobbe to be there, a young player going out against the odds to have a crack at Gardiner and King, who are great ruckmen he couldn't get a bigger contest or opportunity to show what he can do."

Monday, 21 December 2009

Impressed with the continued development of Matthew Lobbe, Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams has pencilled him as second ruck in 2010 next to chief big man Dean Brogan.

"Right now, Matthew Lobbe will be taking the second ruck spot and he'll get the opportunity to do that," Williams said.

"We're going to have a lot of versatility in the ruck. No one will know exactly what we're doing and right now I don't know either."

Friday, 18 September 2009

Port Adelaide has re-signed Danyle Pearce, Warren Tredrea, Michael Pettigrew, Tom Logan and Matthew Lobbe to new deals.

"From a personal point of view I was satisfied with my form and fitness this year and I can't wait to start pre-season and build towards 2010," Tredrea said.

"I'm also looking forward to helping with the development our young players, who really are the core of our playing group now."
