Leon Cameron will take over as the new footy boss at Sydney after Charlie Gardiner departed the role to return home to Melbourne.

"Leon's experience across all aspects of the game is unmatched and we are fortunate to have someone of Leon's character and skillset transition into the role," Swans CEO Tom Harley said.

Charlie Gardiner will succeed Tom Harley as the Sydney's head of football.

Harley will take over from long-standing and highly-influential Swans chief executive and managing director Andrew Ireland, who will retire at the end of the year.

"He brings elite AFL experience coupled with legal and commercial acumen from his time as a senior associate at one of Melbourne's top law firms," Harley said of Gardiner.

"Charlie is an outstanding person with strong values, which clearly align with our club values."
