Friday, 20 September 2024

Cats assistant coach Steven King is rushed to hospital after collapsing at training.

The 45-year-old collapsed on the field while talking to colleagues and players at the start of the light training session and was quickly tended to by club medical staff.

Geelong coach Chris Scott later said it was not a life-threatening situation, and that King was conscious and breathing normally before being taken to hospital.

"For us to prioritise his health, it would be irresponsible for us to even consider him to be around over the next 24 hours or so," Scott told reporters about an hour after the incident.

Steven King will serve as Gold Coast's interim coach following the sacking of Stuart Dew.

"Ultimately, I'd do whatever this club needs me to do and if that's my role, that's my role for the next eight weeks," King said.

"My focus is purely to get through this week, get a result against St Kilda and make sure, whatever happens, that this place is left in a really good spot for whoever comes in."

St Kilda assistant coaches Robert Harvey and Steven King have been granted early releases from their contracts.

"My decision to leave the St Kilda Football Club was a difficult one. I have a great love for the club and a strong desire to one day return to the club in the future," Harvey said.

"I believe my coaching development will be best served in a different environment where I can continue to gain the skills required to become a senior coach."
