Greg Broughton Biography

Wednesday, 2 September 2015

Greg Broughton has announced his retirement and will get a farewell game with the Suns at the SCG against the Sydney in the final round of the 2015 regular season.

Broughton admitted that 2015 was a struggle, both mentally and physically, for him.

"I think it's a pretty easy decision on my behalf," he said.

"I think early days my body would hold up (better). I think I like to say I'm more of a crash and bash type player.

"In the latter stages of my career I started to get sorer and sorer and more injuries."

Gold Coast select Greg Broughton with pick No.67 at the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

"He's part of our family now. It was tough having him go off the list, but he was just out of contract at the wrong time," Suns list manager Scott Clayton said.

"He'll be our nominated rookie (to be elevated to the senior list) and he's in. We always said we'd come to an arrangement.

"Greg really wants to end up on the Gold Coast, he likes it here and wants to be here. He's been terrific for us."

Gold Coast delist Greg Broughton but will likely re-draft him as a rookie for the 2015 season.

"He'd rather stay on the Gold Coast and play with us, but he has to go through this process," Gold Coast list manager Scott Clayton said.

"We'll take him as a rookie if we get the opportunity. I don't think he's keen to get up and go, but that's the rules and hopefully he remains with us."

"It's an exciting young group and I'm looking forward to starting in the next month. It's been hard work over the last couple of months, meeting new guys and a new coaching group, but it's been great."
