Adelaide says it sacrificed a list spot with one of its rookie selections to protect the welfare of Sam Shaw.
Ongoing concussion issues forced Shaw to call time on his career earlier this month after playing 24 games in seven seasons.
"With the collective bargaining agreement still not finalised, it was an administrative judgement to give him the protection from a welfare point of view," Reid said.
"It gives Sam the protection from a welfare point of view and the protection of the CBA going forward because it's a career-ending injury."
