As he prepares for his 50th game, Luke Russell admits his spot in the Suns' side never seems secure.

"My spot does feel like I'm going to be pushed out at times," Russell said.

"It's the sort of thing that's in the back of your head, but at the end of the day I just want to go out there and do the best I can as a teammate firstly, but then perform secondly.

"I want to be that player that can play consistently."

Luke Russell has surgery to re-attach cartilage to his hip bone and have his bones shaved.

"I've decided to do it (the surgery) and make sure I can come back, have no issues next year at all and nothing hanging over my head with my hips and stuff," Russell said.

"I want to make sure I get them stronger over the pre-season and start next year on a good note with no injuries."

Gold Coast's Luke Russell isn't afraid to admit he made mistakes in his first AFL season and is hoping to benefit from a better attitude towards pre-season this year.

"I missed a bit of pre-season last year because I got sick and a bit run down. I didn't do the right things," he said.

"I think just adapting to the training load and just not doing the right things recovery-wise. I didn't really watch myself as much as I am this year. It was a minor little thing and I missed two or three weeks, but you can't afford to miss that."

Luke Russell makes his AFL debut for Gold Coast at the Gabba with 11 disposals (7 kicks and 4 handballs) and 2 marks in a 90-point loss to Melbourne.
