Tom Curran Biography

Monday, 17 November 2014

Tom Curran has not given up hope of reviving his AFL career despite a horror run of foot injuries that resulted in him being delisted by North Melbourne.

Curran's three years at Arden Street were ravaged by recurring right navicular stress fractures, with the key forward undergoing three operations in little more than a year.

But after making little significant progress in his rehabilitation from his most recent surgery, Curran accepted medical advice midway through the 2014 season that he give his foot a year's rest from all forms of running.

"There's a lot of cartilage damage in the foot and it will take a big sort of effort for it to heal," Curran said.

"I'm a realist and know (returning to the AFL) is a very slim chance, but it's not one that I'm going to give up on."

Liam Anthony, Taylor Hine, Robin Nahas, Mitch Wilkins, Tom Curran, Cameron Delaney and rookies Tim McGenniss and Max Warren have all been delisted by the Kangaroos.

Tom Curran, who has struggled with foot injuries in his two years at the Kangaroos, signs a new deal that will keep him at the club until the end of 2014.

"Obviously coming off the two injuries, it's pretty good to have that security, knowing I've got next year to prolong my career," Curran said.

"Josh Caddy had exactly the same surgery a couple of years ago and look at him now, he's playing senior footy at Geelong," Curran says. I'm really confident about it this time around, I'm really confident I'll come back OK."

Tom Curran will miss the rest of the year after suffering a recurrence of the serious foot injury that ruined his 2012 season.

"Tom's played a number of games (for North Ballarat) and has been feeling good but he had a return of his foot pain last week, so we investigated it straight away and it turns out we need to do surgery again," North medical services director Steve Saunders said.

"We need to re-orientate the screw in the bone and do a bone graft as well so it heals better. The old screw comes out and a new one will go in."

Robbie Tarrant says he is under pressure to keep his spot with the emergence of young forwards in Aaron Black, Majak Daw and Tom Curran.

"I feel a lot of pressure to keep lifting my game," Tarrant said.

"Blacky's had a really good pre-season, he's really taken his fitness base to a new level, and Majak has improved so much over the last few seasons.

"Tommy Curran has been able to get out on the track now too. Unfortunately for him last year he only played a couple games of VFL before he hurt his foot.

"If there was no pressure you might rest on your laurels a little bit, but it's really good at the minute because you know full well you have to continue to work on your game and improve."

Monday, 25 June 2012

North Melbourne youngster Tom Curran will have surgery to mend a stress fracture in his foot, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

"We took a really conservative approach with him when he came into the club," North football chief Donald McDonald said.

"At the time, we didn't go with the surgery option. We put him in a moon boot because that was the advice from the medicos.

"About a week ago he started to get a little bit sore so we went in and got it scanned and the doctors just felt that the best option now was to put it a screw in it."
