Alex Sexton Biography

Wednesday, 28 April 2021

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew says Alex Sexton still has an important role to play for Gold Coast in 2021, despite the Suns sharpshooter being dropped for a third time inside 12 months.

"It's unfortunate for Secco but he was also aware we wanted to change the mix. The guys that played got the job done, so it's likely we'll look to reward those guys. He still will be (important). We anticipate he'll come back in and have an influence," Dew said.

Under new coach Stuart Dew, Alex Sexton has made a home for himself in the Suns' forward line.

With 27 goals to his name so far in the season, Sexton will likely finish as the club's leading goalkicker for 2018.

"He's been amazing and personally giving me the clarity in my role," Sexton said of Dew.

Dew says he has been pleasantly surprised by Sexton's output this year.

"He's a great player around the club. He's had a really good year and he does go under the radar externally," Dew said.

"I've been quite surprised. He's one, in my first month or two, where I thought, why haven't I heard more about this guy?"

Alex Sexton re-signs with Gold Coast and will remain at the club until the end of 2019.

Sexton was in good form for the Suns before he was struck down with the club's injury curse, breaking his arm in round seven.

"He has outstanding character, has shown great football promise, and will boast a bright future on the Gold Coast for years to come," Suns list manager Scott Clayton said.

Sexton said playing at a club so close to home made it an easy decision for him to re-commit to the club and he expected the Suns to work their way through this difficult period.

"Even though we are being challenged at the moment, I see an exciting future ahead, and believe the club is heading in the right direction. We really do have such a unique opportunity to achieve something special for this city," Sexton said.

"To have the opportunity to live out my AFL dream so close to family and friends is something I don’t take for granted, and am committed to helping this team reach the ultimate success."
