Harry Cunningham Biography

Sunday, 21 July 2024

Harry Cunningham reflects on becoming the 36th Sydney player to reach 200 games.

"I've always wanted to do this as my job, I think back to when I was four, five years old this is what I wanted to do," he said.

"Everyone has their battles, with injury and form, trying to learn the system, a game plan. One thing I've tried to do is really enjoy that process. It's something I've got a hold on more later in my career. You never know when it's going to end, so you've got to enjoy it while you can."

Peter Wright is slapped with a four-match ban after he pled guilty to the airborne bump that concussed Harry Cunningham and resulted in the Sydney defender being stretchered off the ground.

Harry Cunningham couldn't crack into the side that went all the way to the Grand Final in 2022, but he's been a mainstay for the Swans in 2023.

"It was frustrating, but I just tried to continue to enjoy my footy and having that mindset has helped me to try and get better every week," he said.

"I'm very privileged to be able to play the game I love, and have loved since I was four years old. Even though I wasn't playing last year, I felt like I was able to help in whatever way I could.

"Helping the younger guys with their progression to take the next step. I think that was the approach I took last year when I was out of the team."

Jake Lloyd, Tom Papley and Harry Cunningham have been added to Sydney's eight-man leadership group for 2021.

Monday, 6 May 2019

Harry Cunningham is ruled out for up to six weeks after tearing the adductor in his right leg during the Swans' match against the Lions.

Cunningham had averaged a career-high 22 disposals over the first seven rounds to be one of Sydney's most consistent performers in 2019 prior to his injury.

Harry Cunningham says he has learnt from the experience of having to deal with a foot injury in 2017.

"It was difficult, but injuries are a part of footy and you've just got to deal with them and move on," he said on Monday.

"With injuries comes opportunities and challenges to show a bit of resilience and hit back, and I was able to do that and play finals footy towards to end of the year.

"I can take some positives from the way I came back and worked my way back into the team."

David Cunningham signs a new two-year deal with Carlton that will keep him at the club until the end of 2019.

"He's demonstrated a strong work ethic and is committed to developing in his midfield role."

Harry Cunningham will miss up to six weeks of footy with a foot injury sustained in the Swan's win over St Kilda.

Cunningham had kicked two goals from 12 possessions before he was forced from the ground late in the third quarter against the Saints due to a partially torn the Lisfranc ligament in his right foot.

Sydney coach John Longmire said Cunningham would be in a moon boot in the short term, but would not need an operation to fix the problem.

"It's really unfortunate for him. He's been in very good form and really important for us, so it's a bit of a setback," Longmire said.

"Fortunately he's avoided surgery, which is a good thing because that would mean the season."

Tuesday, 19 April 2016

Harry Cunningham signs a new three-year deal with Sydney that will keep him at the club until the end of 2019.

"I am absolutely stoked to be able to re-sign and stay here for an extra three years," Cunningham said.

"I owe a lot to the Swans and hopefully I can repay their faith over the next three years."

Wednesday, 10 September 2014

Swans coach John Longmire praises youngster Harry Cunningham who has played every game for the Swans so far in 2014.

"Harry's a young kid off our rookie list, has played every game and is playing some important roles," Longmire said.

"Whether he's kicking goals off half-forward, he's played wing, he's played inside mid, he's played down back and on the weekend he had a run-with role with Stephen Hill, who's one of the best players in the competition.

"We've got the faith, and the players have enormous faith in his ability, to be able to carry out his role every week.

"He's a superb athlete, so disciplined, and he gives us enormous flexibility."

Monday, 30 June 2014

"It's a bit of a shock, but I'll take it," Cunningham said.

"I don't think I had my best game on the weekend, but I believe I've been in reasonably good form.

"I suppose it's a bit of a reward for a bit of work over time."
