Tim Sumner's brief AFL career is over, after the 20-year-old informed Gold Coast of his desire to end his time with the club.

Sumner and the Suns had been working closely in a bid to revive the South Australian's hunger to train and play, but after more than a month of personal leave, the small forward notified club officials of his decision this week.

Sumner, his management, Gold Coast and the AFL Players Association met in Adelaide on Friday before the third-year player made his final decision.

Suns general manager of football operations, Marcus Ashcroft, said while relinquishing Sumner from the senior list was a setback, the club remained committed to working with him.

"We completely understand Timmy's position, and have been working with him and his manager for some time assisting where we could off the field in a bid to reignite his passion for AFL," Ashcroft said.

"Although disappointed to lose Timmy, we will assist him in his transition to life away from the Gold Coast Suns and wish him every success in the future."

Tim Sumner makes his AFL debut for Gold Coast at Kardinia Park with 10 disposals (8 kicks and 2 handballs), 3 marks and a tackle in a 52-point loss to Geelong.

Tim Sumner says he has learnt from the mistakes of older brother Byron, who was axed by the Swans in 2011.

"He made a mistake being there and he said 'once you get up there, just do everything right'," Tim said of Bryon's advice.

"Listen, respect everyone else around you and you will go well. He said don't follow in his footsteps."
