Sam Siggins Biography

Monday, 24 August 2015

Adelaide has parted ways with young defender Sam Siggins, who will return home to Tasmania due to personal reasons.

In a brief statement released on Monday afternoon the club said Siggins instigated talks about his future and as a result of those talks he would be delisted at the end of the year.

The club will keep offering the 21-year-old advice and try to "assist in his future endeavours".

The dramatic Kurt Tippett salary cap scandal costs the Adelaide Crows powerhouse Glenelg forward Tim O'Brien whom they would have selected with pick 20 had they not given up their first round pick.

O'Brien was snapped up by Hawthorn at pick 28 while the Crows had to wait until pick 62 for their first selection which they used on Sam Siggins.

"We liked him a lot, along with Sam Siggins" Adelaide recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie said of O'Brien.

"Obviously, the local (O'Brien) would have got the nod if we'd still had pick 20 but they're both quality blokes with great temperaments.

"We would have loved to have been in a position to draft Timmy but we weren't, so good luck to the Hawks and we wish Timmy all the best there."

After giving up two early draft picks in the 2012 national draft, the Crows pick up Lauderdale's Sam Siggins with pick 62 and Calder Cannon Rory Atkins with number 81.

"He's been ranked as one of the top 30 kids in Australia in his year and we've picked him up in the 80s," Ogilvie said of Atkins.

"He's a bubbly kid, enthusiastic, got a bit of cheek, he'll enjoy our club.

"I like these two players a lot and I'm really rapt we've got them at the footy club."

In Sam Siggins, Adelaide believes they have found a gem for the backline, robbed in recent years by the departures of Nathan Bock and Phil Davis.

"We did a lot of work into Sam," Adelaide list manager David Noble said of Siggins.

"His ground level ball is fantastic. He's a good decision-maker, good kick and diligent worker, so his profile was really strong."
