Nick Kommer's AFL career appears over after Essendon delisted him following an injury-troubled run at the club.

"Nick is a wonderful young man and an extremely popular member of the playing group," Essendon football manager Rob Kerr said.

"Despite the injury setbacks Nick has faced since arriving at the club, he has always maintained professional standards and shown commitment in his approach to developing his football career."

Nick Kommer has his dreadlocks cropped as part of the World's Greatest Shave for leukaemia research, raising more than $10,000.

Nick Kommer makes his return to Essendon's senior side in the Bombers' NAB Challenge win against Carlton.

Kommer's 2014 and 2015 campaigns were ruined by knee tendinitis in his left leg, which required three separate surgeries to correct.

"I was probably more nervous than in my first AFL game because I wasn't sure how my body would hold up," Kommer said.

"I've felt pretty good since the game. At the moment we're still monitoring how I'm feeling but I'm backing up this week against Geelong so we'll see how I go."

Nick Kommer played 19 games in his debut season in 2013, kicked 10 goals and added a frenzied attack on the ball to Essendon's forward line.

"If someone had told me I was going to come in and play nearly a full season in my first year I wouldn't have believed it," Kommer said.

"But if they then said I'd miss the next two years with injury I'd have also said 'That won't happen'. It's been an interesting ride so far."

Essendon will continue to take a cautious approach with Nick Kommer in his recovery from a knee injury, with no timeframe slated for the small forward to return to full training.

"It's been a long road for Nick, but in the last fortnight he's made real progress in that he's now running, which is significant progress for him," Essendon general manager of performance Neil Craig said.

"He's still got a way to go but at least everything is in a positive direction at the moment, and having been out for so long, it's good for him to be able to get out there and sweat and push himself and start to test himself at training."

Young Bombers Nick Kommer and Will Hams will be sidelined due to surgery.

Kommer had a impressive debut last year and played 19 games but he is yet to return this season because of a knee injury.

Hams, who played two games last year, has gone under the knife to repair a psoas tendon in his midriff.

Essendon extends Nick Kommer's contract by two years, tying him to the club until the end of 2016.

"We have a pretty strong midfield so I will keep working up forward and try to have more of an impact on the scoreboard, but hopefully I can push through there over time," Kommer said.

Bombers Paddy Ryder and Nick Kommer accept bans for rough conduct against Fremantle and will miss three and two matches respectively.

Ryder's bump, in particular, resulted in Docker Luke McPharlin being concussed and subbed out of the match.
