Irish recruit Daniel Flynn has walked out on Port Adelaide to stay at home and potentially resurrect his Gaelic football career.

"We're obviously disappointed that Daniel won't be returning to the club but we understand his reasons," Power football manager Chris Davies said.

"Daniel has battled with homesickness while he's been at Alberton including taking extended leave for eight weeks last March.

"Daniel has been well-liked team member and we all wish him the best for the future."

Port Adelaide's Irish rookie Daniel Flynn has again been granted extended leave as he continues to battle homesickness.

He was allowed to return home while the club trained in Dubai in November 2013 to visit family, and again in March last year as his grandfather was ill.

"Daniel has returned home to Ireland and the club has given him extra leave to be with his family following his request," Power football manager Chris Davies said.

"We'll remain in close contact with Daniel and his family and we aim to reach an outcome in the coming weeks."

Port Adelaide has confirmed international rookie Daniel Flynn's will resume his career at the club after returning from Ireland.

"Daniel's obviously very close to his family and they've been very supportive of him coming back to Port Adelaide," football manager Peter Rohde said.

"We know the players will welcome him back and we'll work to make sure he settles back into life here in Adelaide."

After a week spent with the European Legion team in London, Irishman Daniel Flynn is keen to resume his AFL career with Port Adelaide.

Flynn was recruited by the Power last year as an international rookie after impressing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, and trained with the club throughout the pre-season.

He played his first AFL game in February during the NAB Challenge, but in March he headed home to be with his terminally ill grandfather, who died shortly after Flynn left Australia.

"They're giving me loads of time but I think I'm going to go back [to Australia]," Flynn said.

"I'd like to go back, but I still have a couple of things to sort out with the club. It's just a matter of seeing where things are at and coming to some sort of arrangement."

The coach of Daniel Flynn's Gaelic football club Jason Ryan says Flynn has given up on his AFL career.

"He has missed Gaelic football an awful lot; he's looking forward to being involved maybe in the U-21 game and being involved with the seniors over the course of the year," Ryan said.

"He's an incredibly talented kid with a brilliant attitude, so Port Adelaide's loss will be Kildare's gain.

"He's given himself a great opportunity out there, he gave it time and effort and worked hard.

"The right decision for him, he feels at this moment, is to be in Kildare.

"He's a great guy, he'll go back to college and study and get good qualifications and move on from there."

Daniel Flynn's AFL career is in question, with the 20-year-old returning home to Ireland indefinitely to be alongside his terminally ill grandfather.

"Over the weekend Daniel Flynn made the decision he'll be going home to Ireland for a reasonably extended period," Power football operations manager Peter Rohde said.

"There's no hiding the fact he's battled homesickness the whole way through and he's been home to visit his grandfather a couple of weeks ago … [he] just feels the need to get back home.

"We'll obviously be in contact with him and Tadhg Kennelly through the AFL will keep working with him to try and help him to make the decision to continue with his AFL career.

"There's a chance he won't be back but we'll keep working with him – he's made a two-year commitment to us and we see it as a long-term path he's on."
