Logan Austin's preparation for the 2019 season has been hampered by a shoulder injury that will keep him out of contact drills for a fortnight.

St Kilda secures Port Adelaide backman Logan Austin on the final day of the 2017 AFL trade period.

"One of our major objectives during the trade period was to strengthen our key defensive stocks and we feel Logan Austin fulfils that need," Saints list manager Tony Elshaug said.

"He has outstanding character and, while we think he will improve, importantly he is ready to play a key defensive role immediately when called upon."

Logan Austin will resume running in two weeks after breaking his leg in the final game of the season.

"It was disappointing to break the leg in the last game, but I suppose if there's a time to break it, it's in the last game of the season when I've already played a few games," Austin said.

"It's just a clean break through the tibia, it's pretty easy to fix, a couple of screws.

"I start running in two weeks time.

"Once I get the fitness base, that's when they (the Power's coaches) will throw me into the match simulation and full-contact stuff after Christmas."

Logan Austin came through the GWS Academy and played two years for the Giants in the NEAFL, but was overlooked by GWS in the 2014 draft.

With six games under his belt and having stood the likes of Travis Cloke, Matthew Pavlich and Drew Petrie in the infancy of his AFL career, the 21-year-old will take on the Giants for the first time at Adelaide Oval on Sunday night.

"It's good for my experience learning off those guys and knowing how aggressive you need to be just to compete,'' Austin said.

"When you match up against them, you do everything you can to stop them because at the end of the day if they kick one early they can get a few on you.

"It's just about being aggressive and they've taught me a lot just playing on them.''

Logan Austin makes his AFL debut for Port Adelaide at the MCG with 10 disposals (7 kicks and 3 handballs) and 5 marks in a 67-point win over Collingwood.

Logan Austin signs a two-year contract extension to remain at Port Adelaide until the end of 2018.

Austin was troubled by injury in his debut season with Port Adelaide, where he played 10 SANFL games.

"Purely because I didn’t play a full year of footy last year, the plan is just to stay injury-free, stay on top of my rehab and have a consistent season," he said.

"I want to get back into it [football] but also need to accept that I might need to be patient, given the time I’ve spent out of the game."

"He plays down back, he's 197cm and he's prepared to come off his man and assist," Port list manager Jason Cripps said.

"He's quite brave in the air, he can intercept mark and he's a really good decision-maker."
