Jake Long says he is looking forward to an AFL career playing with fellow father-son Essendon players Joe Daniher and Jobe Watson.

"Hopefully we can get some chemistry going in the future," Long said after tallying 13 disposals in his debut against Gold Coast.

"The reception from the crowd was amazing. I think the Bomber fans have come out in numbers and it's great to see them all and the love that they give Joey and Jobe (Watson).

"I know they love Joey and Jobe - hopefully I can join that three and make a trio."

The son of Essendon champion and 1993 Norm Smith medallist Michael Long will make his debut for the Bombers this weekend against Gold Coast.

Jake Long, having been elevated to the club's senior list, has been included to take on the Suns this week at Etihad Stadium after some impressive VFL form.

"I'm pretty excited and relieved and happy for me and my family and the club, just really excited," Long said.

"We're a tight knit group at the Bombers."

"We've known Jake since he was a baby; he grew up on our doorstep," Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro.

"He's a really exciting player but he'll take time, he's only light. He's a bit taller than his old man and he's got speed and agility.

"He sees the game unfold really well and he's got that little bit of x-factor you look for in a player.

"There's just something about him. He's been in full pre-season for a couple of weeks and he's exceeding our expectations."

Having trained with the Bombers for the past few weeks, and followed them all his life, Jake Long will officially join Essendon as a rookie on Wednesday – the club where his father Michael grew into a champion.

The club confirmed on Monday it would pick the 18-year-old at this week's NAB AFL Rookie Draft, having nominated him under the father-son rookie pre-selection rule.

That gave the Bombers first rights to grab Long should he not be taken in the national draft, and the wiry youngster has prepared for joining the club by training with the senior squad in the past month.

"We're pretty proud of what he (Jake) has achieved," Michael Long said.

"He's just finished year 12 ... to top that off to be rookie listed by the club that's been a big part of my life, it's a proud moment for the family."
