Shane Yarran Biography

Saturday, 21 April 2018

Shane Yarran passes away at the age of 28.

"The AFL Players' Association is incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Shane Yarran," CEO Paul Marsh said on behalf of the AFLPA Board, Indigenous Advisory Board, and players.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Shane’s family and friends, our thoughts are with them."

Chris Yarran may attempt to revive his AFL career, despite retiring from Richmond to deal with mental health issues, former Carlton teammate Eddie Betts says.

"I think he's going to play for a WAFL side over there, Swan Districts, where he played when he was younger," Betts said.

"He (Yarran) actually said to me that if you look at what Nathan Krakouer did, he gave up footy, went back to WA, got his life back on track and gave it another crack and now he's back playing for Port Adelaide.

"I guess Chris can look at someone like that and hopefully get his life back on track and try again to play AFL footy."

Shane Yarran has pleaded not guilty in a Perth court to an allegation that he stabbed another man and is due back in court for a trial allocation hearing on February 28.

Yarran still faces a separate charge over an assault allegedly involving a family member and previously indicated he would plead not guilty to that offence.

He will appear in court for that matter on February 7.

An expletive laden rant directed at the Dockers appears on Facebook under Shane Yarran's name.

The delisted Docker, however, has told the club that he does not have a Facebook account and that the posted message was not from him.

"Despite numerous attempts the club has not be able to talk directly to Shane Yarran regarding posts made from a social media account in his name," a club spokesman said.

"However, last night Shane advised a club official via SMS that he did not have a Facebook account.

"The account from which the posts were made has now been deactivated."

The Dockers announce that Shane Yarran has retired from AFL football.

Yarran had been on personal leave since the start of December after being charged with unlawful wounding.

Dockers chief executive Steve Rosich said the decision for Yarran to retire was in his best interests.

"We have met several times during the past two weeks and again today to discuss Shane’s welfare and the best way for him to cope with the personal and off-field matters he is facing," Rosich said.

"A focus of those discussions was to establish a course of action that would best cater for Shane’s welfare in the long-term.

"It was agreed two weeks ago that allowing Shane to take a period of personal leave would allow sufficient time for him to focus on resolving his personal and off-field matters.

"However, upon further reflection by Shane and his management it was agreed that a longer-term solution was required, which would allow him to focus solely on his personal and off-field matters - without the pressure and demands of being an AFL footballer.

"It was agreed by all parties today that it was in Shane’s best interests that he retire from AFL football immediately.

"It was a difficult decision for Shane to reach, but both he and his management believe that focusing on his personal and off-field matters at this time needs to take priority over his football career."

Ross Lyon denies that Fremantle's culture has been eroded by a series of off-field incidents, the most recent involving Michael Johnson and Shane Yarran.

"I've been here five years now. Clearly I've heard the headlines thrown about culturally. But cultures are built over a long period of time," Lyon said.

"For four and a half years basically we were pretty much - for want of a better term - incident free.

"But certainly in a period in the off-season there's been a couple of situations that haven't pleased us.

"Clearly there's boundaries in society that if you have alleged to have broken, it escalates well beyond us.

"Our basic premise is you know right from wrong, and civility costs nothing."

Shane Yarran has been granted personal leave from the Dockers following a new charge of unlawful wounding.

The alleged incident occurred in July 2015, before being drafted by the Dockers.

The 27-year-old made a brief court appearance on Tuesday in relation to a charge of aggravated common assault. Yarran intends to plead not guilty to the charge.

"We have accepted Shane’s request for personal leave, which will allow him to concentrate on his personal life and also focus on some off-field matters," Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said.

"An allegation of this nature is treated with the utmost seriousness by the club and we will continue to monitor the legal process closely."

Wednesday, 16 November 2016

Shane Yarran will plead not guilty to a charge of aggravated common assault when he appears in court next month.

The 27-year-old advised the Dockers that he had been charged for an incident on the weekend that allegedly involved a family member.

Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich said the club would not make further comment while the matter was before the courts.

"An allegation of this nature is treated with the utmost seriousness by the club and we will continue to monitor the legal process closely," Rosich said.

Shane Yarran makes his AFL debut for Fremantle with 10 disposals (5 kicks and 5 handballs), 4 marks, 2 tackles and 2 goals in a 24-point loss to Gold Coast.

Thursday, 21 July 2016

Shane Yarran will make his AFL debut for Fremantle against Gold Coast this week.

His debut comes just a month after he was charged by police for disorderly conduct in public, pleading guilty in the Perth Magistrate's Court two weeks ago and being fined $800.

"We always support the person and challenge the behaviour," Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said.

"We believe he’s a good person who's had some challenges. He's building his life and is trying to redeem himself.

"I can only judge him since he's walked through the door here. You can only take people as you find them.

"Therefore, the confidence was built with the action over a long period of time."

Shane Yarran escapes a club suspension after receiving a fine from the Perth Magistrates' Court for two charges following an incident in Leederville last month.

Yarran, 27, appeared in court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly behaviour in public and one count of failure to obey an order given by police. The court fined him $800.

He was charged after he ignored a move on notice that police issued during a night out prior to the bye.

Fremantle elected not to suspend Yarran meaning he is available to play this weekend.

But the club has imposed an undisclosed financial sanction in accordance with the AFL Players' code of conduct policy. Yarran will also undergo a counselling program and will need to complete a period of volunteer work with a community organisation.

Sunday, 26 June 2016

Shane Yarran is facing a club-imposed ban after being charged by police for disorderly behaviour in public on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old was first issued with a move-on notice in Leederville but was charged a short time later after allegedly disobeying the police order.

In a statement on Sunday night, Fremantle said Yarran notified the club of the incident as soon as possible and met with club officials on Sunday morning.

The club added Yarran would now be required to undergo counselling.

If Shane Yarran is able to make his senior debut for Fremantle next season he will become the fourth AFL player from a small street in Perth's outer eastern suburbs.

In the 1990s, Bushby Street in the low socioeconomic suburb of Midvale was the home for West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui, Fremantle livewire Michael Walters and former Carlton, now Richmond veteran Chris Yarran, who is Shane's cousin.

"We had a lot to do living in the same street as Son Son (Walters), Chris and Nico," Yarran said.

"We had plenty of days out on the roads and paddock, it was awesome."

The roads Yarran took from Bushby Street do not look anything like those the other three have travelled.

When Naitanui, Chris Yarran and Walters were drafted in the 2008 NAB AFL draft, Shane Yarran was serving time in prison for burglary charges.

He was incarcerated for six years before returning to normal life and football in 2013.

"I appreciate the interest with my past," Yarran said.

"Obviously my past is always going to be there but I think my focus is what the future holds with me at the club."

Wednesday, 25 November 2015

Fremantle select Shane Yarran with pick No.61 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

"Shane is a top-line WAFL player at Subiaco and we just thought at the next level he may be able to impact," general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said.

“It’s up to him to come in now and apply himself to it all."

Yarran was released from jail in March 2013 after being sentenced to six years for burglary.

"We did our background on Shane and spent a significant amount of time with him," Lloyd said.

"We thought ... how he has applied himself in recent years, he deserved an opportunity.

"He is really driven and wants to make it and we see someone there who has got a burning ambition to be a good AFL player."
