Trade talks on Dan Houston's future drag on as clubs search for more chips to get a deal done, with Collingwood's six-year offer putting the Pies in a strong position. But any three-club trade involving Port Adelaide, Gold Coast and Collingwood and including Jack Lukosius, John Noble, Joe Richards and Houston remains some way off as North Melbourne continues to hover with its future first-round draft pick on the table as part of its pitch for Houston, and Carlton doesn't give up the chase. Collingwood is keen on Houston, with its contract offer extending the dual All-Australian by two more years than his current remaining four seasons to the end of 2030, but the Pies need the Suns' No.13 pick to on-trade to the Power as part of a package if they are to land the gun half-back.

Port Adelaide's general manager of football, Chris Davies, says free agent Harry Perryman's choice of Collingwood over Port Adelaide has complicated Dan Houston's request for a trade due to a lack of options available to replace him. "Our perspective has always been that we would prefer Dan to stay," Davies said. "We tried to bring in a couple of guys who might be able to do a job replacing him. Now, that hasn't worked as well as we would have liked so it's fair to say that needs a period of reflection to see what we're going to do next."

Dan Houston says he's staying at Port Adelaide and rejecting offers to join rival clubs in Melbourne. "I am not leaving next year. I am contracted, I wouldn't have signed the contract if I wasn't keen on Adelaide and keen on Port Adelaide and I love the place, I love the footy club and the footy club have been good to me," Houston said.

Dan Houston's future with Port Adelaide comes under a cloud after he laid a brutal bump on Crow Izak Rankine, causing the Rankine to be severely concussed before being taken from the ground. The expected suspension from his bump will likely mean Houston will not participate in the Power's finals campaign and, with speculation around his desire to move to Victoria post-2024, may mean he will not play in Power colours again. Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley defended Houston in the post-match conference that followed. "He's a really fair player, he's an outstanding person. He's a really, really good person. I can't say it enough," Hinkley said. "And I know people will sit there and go, 'I don't care whether he's a really, really good person'. I do. I care about him. He's a fantastic bloke."

Dan Houston's manager Nick Gieschen reveals how his client became one of the steals from his rookie draft year. "It was really agonising, because he had a good start to the year and played quite well in the champs. He kicked four in a game down in Geelong, then the game after the champs finished I was at Oakleigh that day and he got a significant injury to his hip," Gieschen said. "He basically missed the rest of the season. That, combined with some other things, forced him to slip through the national draft and as we know the rookie draft can be totally random."

Dan Houston and Peter Ladhams are suspended for two and three matches respectively after they were deemed to have broken the AFL's COVID-19 protocols by entertaining visitors at Ladhams' home. Port Adelaide also received a $50,000 sanction ($25,000 suspended) with the $25,000 to come out of the club's football department soft cap for next year. "I'm very embarrassed to put the club and my teammates in this position. There was no excuse for my complacency and I fully accept the sanction handed down by the AFL," Ladhams said. "Our entire club has worked so hard this season with all the challenges that have come our way and I feel like I have let the boys down with this breach," Houston said.

Dan Houston is relishing his permanent switch to the midfield, revealing he never thought it would happen until getting his chance midway through 2019. "I thought I'd be down back for the majority of my career. Obviously last year in China, Rocky pulling out late, sort of opened that door a little bit, but I'd always gone in there at training to help improve my skills in that area," Houston said. It's the first time Houston has completed a full pre-season as a midfield having started his career as a forward before moving into defence. "I found last year I was trying to learn during the game and not so much during the week at training," he said. "I think my running's improved, so I feel like I can get from contest to contest and get around the ground really well compared to last year."

Travis Boak wins his second John Cahill Medal as Port Adelaide's best and fairest player for 2019. The 31-year-old polled 179 votes to finish 11 votes ahead of defender Darcy Byrne-Jones, who was a further vote clear of third-placed Dan Houston. The medal caps a brilliant 13th season for Boak, who played 21 games and averaged 30 disposals and five clearances. "There's been a lot of people write me off the last two or three years and say I shouldn't even be in the side," Boak told the Port Adelaide faithful. "It's not nice to hear those things, they certainly hurt a little but for me it's about going out there and just trying to be the best person, the best player you can be and that's all I can do."

Dan Houston signs a three-year contract extension with Port Adelaide to remain at the club until the end of 2022. "I’m really settled in Adelaide, I’ve got a lot of good friends here and Port Adelaide has made me feel welcome from day one," Houston said. "I had to earn the respect of the players and coaches and work my way up but I have managed to string some games together and now I want to cement my spot, keep improving and become more of a leader."

Dan Houston has settled in well to the Power's defence this season since being upgraded from the rookie list. Houston's kicking in the back half was identified as an area that could benefit the Power as they looked to cut down their turnovers. "Ken (coach Ken Hinkley) said one of the things we need to work on is our kicking and ball movement, and I thought I could bring that to the team," Houston said. "Playing down back helps the team if I can use the ball well. "If I can bring that to the team each week, then that's what Ken wants me to do."

Dan Houston is emerging as a round-one bolter for the Power as they search for a replacement for injured defender Jasper Pittard. Houston's impressive form across half-back has been one of positives to come out of the JLT Community Series. "He was a forward his first year and towards the end of last year they put him down back and he did some good things," Power assistant coach Brendon Lade said. "He's showed some really good signs and he kicks the ball as well as anyone. "He's defending really well at the moment, so he's pressing his claims to put his hand up for selection."
