Jack Payne says he will have a "slow week" on the training track as he continues to manage a knee injury ahead of the Lions' Grand Final against Sydney.

Payne was subbed out of the Lions' elimination final win against Carlton with a knee injury that looked a chance to rule him out for the rest of the season.

But he was cleared of major damage and pushed himself to play in last week's semi-final against Greater Western Sydney and again in the Lions' nail-biting win over Geelong on Saturday.

"Injuries happen in sport and there's a lot of players that are playing injured," Payne told AAP.

"I'll just have a slow week on the track and prepare as usual. I'm getting a jab so it takes away the pain, and it's just one of those things ... there's a lot of players playing injured at this time of year."

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan says leaving Jack Payne out of Brisbane's Grand Final team was a tough decision, but the key defender's lack of football late in the season eventually cost him.

"Jack Payne leading into this game would have played one game in five weeks, and his first full training session was yesterday," Fagan said.

"He did really well, but at the end of the day it's going to be hot out there tomorrow, bodies are going to be crashing in pretty hard, we just thought that it was a wiser decision to go with the guy who is a little bit more match hardened."

Jack Payne is set to miss up to six weeks due to a stress reaction in his foot.

Jack Payne is in the frame to be part of the Lions' 2020 finals campaign after being a solid contributor late in the season for Brisbane.

Payne comes from a background in discus and said there was an unlikely crossover between the sports.

"When you're doing discus, it's a lot of footwork stuff and balance, so when you're flying for your marks, that can help you - footwork and technique," Payne said.

"I did discus for about four years and the year before my draft year, thought why not give it a good shot to hopefully fulfil my dream of playing AFL. I gave away discus to chase my AFL dream and it came true thankfully."

Payne spent most of his childhood chasing track and field dreams.

But aged 13 he caught the eye of a talent scout – despite just “mucking around” in a game at St Andrew’s Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast – and was signed to the Lions Academy.

“I never really followed AFL. I just played a couple of games with school.”

When he was 17, he decided to give athletics away, despite having represented Australia in the Oceanic Games for discus.

Payne knew AFL was where was his future lay.

“I saw some of my mates get drafted that year (2016),” he said.

“They were a part of the academy as well. It made me want to have a real good crack at it.

“I wanted to be around the team environment. Going through athletics, it was all about yourself ... to be around good mates 24/7 was what won it for me.”
