It took him a while to get there, but Matt Guelfi has become an important part of Essendon's line-up in 2019.

"I'm still a role player, but I think I'm growing a bit out of that. I'm having a bit more impact on the game this year whereas last year I was just playing a role," he said.

"You always want to do that, but you also want to help the team and I'm getting better at that this year."

Jeremy McGovern's one-match rough conduct suspension is upheld at the AFL Tribunal following a complicated hearing,

McGovern had been offered a one-match ban last Friday, having shoved Essendon's Matt Guelfi over the boundary line and into a fence. The incident left the Bombers youngster with concussion, as well as bruised ribs having also struck a chair on the edge of the field.

The Eagles argued two issues at the Tribunal. The first was that McGovern's actions were reasonable in the circumstances, while suggesting that the presence of the security guard's chair impacted upon Guelfi's ability to protect his head from hitting the fence.

However, the Tribunal agreed with the AFL's position that the location of the chair shouldn't change the fact that McGovern's actions in pushing Guelfi were unreasonable.

Matt Guelfi is sent to hospital for precautionary scans after being pushed by Jeremy McGovern as he kicked, crashing into the Optus Stadium fence and also a plastic chair. McGovern was reported for the incident.

"He's getting some scans or X-rays, I'm not sure exactly what, just to check if he's got any injury to his upper abdominal area," Essendon coach John Worsfold said.

"He felt as if he'd hurt his back and neck in the crash, so they're just double-checking that so we can find out if he's OK to fly home.

"That's the main thing, he's going to catch a plane tomorrow, we need to know that's all safe for him."

Kyle Langford addresses his teammates to explain his thinking after his bizarre brain fade during Saturday's loss to St Kilda.

The 22-year-old, along with teammate Matt Guelfi, ran past the ball near the sidelines when a free kick was paid to St Kilda.

Instead of stopping and returning to see out the play, Langford ran to the interchange bench and allowed the Saints to stream forward unopposed.

"Kyle's addressed it with the playing group around what his mindset was at the time and why he made a mistake. [It was] a simple mistake," Bombers coach John Worsfold said.

Sunday, 15 April 2018

Matt Guelfi makes his AFL debut for Essendon at Docklands Stadium with 17 disposals (11 kicks and 6 handballs), 3 marks and 2 tackles in a 22-point win over Port Adelaide.
