Chayce Jones Biography

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks expects Chayce Jones to step up in 2021 after the youngster struggled at times in the midfield in 2020.

"We probably threw him in the deep end a little, putting him right inside with some of the bigger bodies that clubs do have in and around the footy. But he's done a hell of a lot of work over the break and he looks like a different man now. He's put on some size, he's added some power, and we're seeing some great stuff in match play and in training," Nicks said of Jones.

"He's super diligent as far as understanding the gameplan (and) an elite runner, right up in the top echelon as far as our runners go. So without putting too much pressure on another player, we really like what Chayce has been able to do this pre-season and hopefully he's taken some confidence out of working hard over the break and we see that early in the year."

Chayce Jones and Ned McHenry have solidified their running dominance at Adelaide with a one-two finish in the Crows' 2km time trial.

"We've run a couple of times together, it's probably about even now," Jones said of his battle with McHenry.

"It's good competition and it makes you better."

The AFL Tribunal upholds a one-match suspension for Luke McDonald after his clumsy, late spoil on Chayce Jones left the Adelaide youngster with a concussion over the weekend.

"I thought we had a pretty good case to get off. But I just hope that Chayce is alright and that he can get up this weekend," McDonald said.

"I'm really disappointed. This week is a massive day for the club and I won't be out there."

Chayce Jones makes his AFL debut for Adelaide at Adelaide Oval with 9 disposals (3 kicks and 6 handballs), 3 marks, 4 tackles and a goal in a 32-point loss to Hawthorn.

Chayce Jones will get another chance to push his claims for a round one debut in the Crows' JLT Community Series encounter against Greater Western Sydney in Canberra.

"He gives us another element where he can play midfield, wing and forward. He's a good runner, he's tough," Adelaide assistant coach Scott Camporeale said.

"The group rates him really highly and so do we as a coaching group."

Adelaide select Chayce Jones with pick No.9 in the 2018 National Draft.

“Chayce is ultra-competitive, he got over a reasonably serious injury last year to have a fantastic season this year and his draft camp was outstanding,” Adelaide recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie said.

“He stepped up to play a significant role in the midfield in the Allies in the division one nationals, which is a great sign for a kid from Tassie… he’s a ripper lad of really high character.”

Jones said he was excited to join the Crows.

“It’s surreal just to be put on the list… the caliber of players at the Club is amazing and I can’t wait to get stuck in and learn from them all and soak in information,” Jones said.
