Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks has revealed young gun Lachlan Sholl is battling low confidence amid the grind of week-to-week AFL after the dual rising star nominee was dropped from the Crows' side.

"He started the season in outstanding form off the back of an incredible off season. At the moment he's just lacking some confidence in himself," Nicks said.

"We know he's an elite ball user. (But) there are times where you can't put on a finger on exactly why your form is not where you know it can be. He's in that position at the moment. He's doing everything possible to be the best player he can, it's just not quite clicking for him."

Lachie Sholl is eyeing Tom Scully's record as the most dominant runner in a single season after a blistering start to 2021.

Telstra Tracker data shows Sholl has clocked the most kilometres on the ground in all six of his games this year and holds the top three efforts across the competition.

Sholl racked up 25 kicks among a career-high 31 disposals, eight marks, and one goal in the Crows' win at Marvel Stadium.

Sholl was overlooked for the round 17 nomination after his 24-disposal and two-goal best-afield performance in Adelaide's win over Carlton, but was rewarded after gathering 19 disposals and six marks against Richmond.

Adelaide draftee Lachlan Sholl says his father, Brett Sholl, has been a good role model for him.

Dad Brett played 35 games for Carlton between 1992 and 1994, including the losing 1993 Grand Final against Essendon.

"Dad played a few games with Carlton, so I'm able to draw on his experience," Lachlan said.

"He's pretty much been my main coach or my main guidance in footy ever since I started. He's definitely a big reason as to why I am the footballer I am.

"He is always giving me advice, but he also always wants me to play for the love of it and just enjoy it as well."

“Lachie Sholl’s just a real hard-grinding hard runner. He’s been really smart, played a lot on the wing early,” Adelaide recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie said.

“Gone pretty well again last year, he’s just been a ball magnet and his two weapons are really decision making and skill."
