Liam Henry will undergo knee surgery and miss the rest of the 2024 season.

"Scans today have shown Liam has significant cartilage damage to his knee," St Kilda executive general manager of football David Misson said.

"Liam has had a rough run with injuries this year which has been disappointing, but we've also been able to see the impact he can have when he is up and running, so we're confident that after this period of rehab we'll see Liam back to his best in 2025."

Liam Henry is traded from Fremantle to St Kilda.

Henry, 22, makes the move to the Saints after St Kilda sent its future second-round and fourth-round picks to the Dockers, receiving Henry and Fremantle's future fourth-round pick in return.

Fremantle remains "extremely disappointed" in departing young gun Liam Henry but will attempt to use the winger to push up the draft board in a trade with St Kilda.

"He's come a long way and improved the areas that he needed to, and was just starting to get reward for that," Fremantle list boss David Walls said.

"That spot opened up, he did play well, and we were looking forward to having him play for 10 years, so extremely disappointing for him to put his hand up and say he wants to move east."

Liam Henry requests a trade from Fremantle, with Hawthorn, St Kilda and North Melbourne the clubs leading the race for him.

"It is disappointing that Liam Henry has opted to explore his options, especially considering we have been involved in his development since he was 15 and he has taken some significant steps forward this year," Dockers football boss Peter Bell said.

"We made a significant investment in Liam, not just through our Next Generation Academy, matching Carlton's bid under NGA concession rules in the 2019 draft, and it was pleasing to see his potential come to fruition this year.

"We will have this investment and his talent as a winger front of mind when looking to facilitate a trade."

Liam Henry is out of contract at the end of the 2023 season and the Dockers know they face a fight to retain the 21-year-old, who has played the best football of his short career in the past five weeks.

"I'm optimistic he'll stay, and I see this as the best place for him to develop his footy and take his career forward. He's played 40 games across his four seasons, and we've given him a lot of opportunities," Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said.

"There's been times where he's needed to go back and work on the things we're asking him to work on, and he's embraced that really well and that's got him to the point where he's played his most consistent footy over the last period of time."

Liam Henry makes his AFL debut for Fremantle at Perth Stadium with 9 disposals (8 kicks and a handball) and 6 marks in a 31-point win over Sydney.

Liam Henry signs a new deal with Fremantle to remain at the club until the end of 2023.
