John McCarthy's playing number at Port Adelaide has been brought out of retirement, 12 years after his death on a post-season trip to Las Vegas.

Power recruit Joe Richards will wear the number with the blessing of McCarthy's family, having followed the same path as his predecessor from Collingwood to the Power.

"Coming from Collingwood, similar to John, and being traded to Port Adelaide, there's a little connection there," Richards said.

"I jumped at the opportunity as soon as they (the club) offered it up."

A complex trade involving multiple picks and players is finalised between Port Adelaide, Collingwood and Gold Coast.

Receives: Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards, Rory Atkins, a first-round pick (currently No.13), two second-round picks (currently No.29 and 36) and a third-round pick (currently No.50)

Gives: Dan Houston, a future first-round pick (tied to Port Adelaide), a second-round pick (currently No.39) and a third-round-pick (currently No.58)

Collingwood
Receives: Dan Houston and a third-round pick (currently No.58)

Joe Richards requests a trade from Collingwood and nominates Port Adelaide, who have offered him a three-year deal, as his club of choice.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough year at Collingwood in 2024, playing nine games of senior football in the back half of the campaign but dealing with a foot injury and illness.

Joe Richards makes his AFL debut for Collingwood at Docklands Stadium with 18 disposals (10 kicks and 8 handballs), 3 marks, 6 tackles and a goal in a 66-point win over West Coast.
